Malala Day: Pakistan poor to be paid to educate kids

The United Nations has officially honored Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani education activist who recently was shot outside of her school. NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

As Pakistan marked "Malala Day" in a global day of support for the teenager shot by the Taliban for promoting girls' education, security fears in her hometown meant her schoolmates could not honor her in public.

Taliban hit men shot Malala Yousafzai on her school bus a month ago in Mingora in Pakistan's north-western Swat Valley in a cold-blooded murder attempt for the "crime" of campaigning for girls' rights to go to school.

The 15-year-old survived and her courage has won the hearts of millions around the world, prompting the UN to declare Saturday a "global day of action" for her.


People around the world are expected to hold vigils and demonstrations honoring Malala and calling for the 32 million girls worldwide who are denied education to be allowed to go to school.

Pakistani prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf saluted Malala's courage and urged his countrymen to stand against the extremist mindset that led to her attack.

"The outpouring of sympathy for Malala and abhorrence over the cowardly act demonstrate the determination of the Pakistani society not to allow a handful of radicalised elements to dictate their agenda," he said.

Private prayer for Malala
But in Mingora, the threat of further Taliban reprisals casts a fearful shadow, and students at Malala's Khushal Public School were forced to honor her in private.

"We held a special prayer for Malala today in our school assembly and also lit candles," school principal Mariam Khalid said.

"We did not organize any open event because our school and its students still face a security threat."

Though their bid to kill Malala failed, the Taliban have said they will attack any woman who stands against them and fears are so great that Khalid said even speaking to the media could put students' lives in danger.

Malala receives thousands of supportive messages from around world

Malala rose to prominence with a blog for the BBC charting life in Swat under the Taliban, whose bloody two-year reign of terror supposedly came to an end with an army operation in 2009.

'Daughter of the nation'
Despite the dangers, some children in Mingora were determined to speak out and pledged to follow Malala's brave example.

"Malala is a good friend of mine. She is brave and has honor and whoever attacked her did a terrible thing," Asma Khan, 12, a student in Saroosh Academy, close to Malala's school told said.

"After the attack on her and her injuries, we have now more courage to study and now we will fulfil her mission to spread education everywhere."

Khan's schoolmate Gul Para, 12, added: "Malala is the daughter of the nation and we are proud of her."

"She has stood by us and for our education up to now and now it is time that we should stand by her and complete her mission," she said.

Pakistani girl shot by Taliban reunited with family

Nearly 100,000 people have signed an online petition calling for Malala to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and on Friday UN special education envoy Gordon Brown handed a separate million-strong petition in support of Malala to Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

Islamabad on Friday announced that poor families will now receive $2 a month per child in primary school.

The program will be funded by the World Bank and Britain and distributed through the government's Benazir Income Support Program, designed to give small cash payments to needy families. The families in the program already receive $10 a month for basic expenditure.

After a stipend program was put in place in Pakistan's Punjab province, a World Bank study found a nine percent increase in girls' enrollment over two years, said Alaphia Zoyab, the South Asia campaigner for internet activist group Avaaz.

Pakistan is struggling to overcome widespread poverty, a Taliban insurgency and massive, endemic corruption. Less than 0.57 percent of Pakistan's 180 million citizens pay income tax, money that the government could use to educate poor children.

Good Night, Exoplanet: Baby name book to raise science funds

When new planets are discovered beyond the solar system, they often get boring designations such as HD 85512b or Gliese 667Cc. A startup hoping to liven up these names has launched a project to create a Baby Planet Name Book full of more colorful suggestions.

The planet name project is the first official product from Uwingu, a new company that aims to raise money for space research, exploration and education.

Now, for 99 cents apiece, you can nominate any name you like to join the new planet name registry, and you can also vote for your favorites among the current list.

"The many, many planets discovered across the galaxy in past 20 years are a tribute to our natural human desire to explore beyond the horizon," planet-hunting astronomer Geoff Marcy of the University of California at Berkeley said in a statement. "Now people all over the world can participate in these discoveries in a new way, giving identities and even personality to billions of planets in our galaxy for the first time."

To be clear, Uwingu officials say the names won't be official, and won't be attached to particular planets ? yet. The only body authorized to officially name celestial objects is the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which hasn't so far expressed an interest in changing the status quo of planet naming.

But Uwingu hopes astronomers might use the names from the project to refer to the new planets they keep finding, at least informally. The current tally of confirmed planets is almost 800 and growing, so that's a lot of worlds that need good names.

Uwingu will use the money raised from the project to support research efforts like SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence)'s Allen Telescope Array in California, as well as space launches and science outreach. The company has also released a suite of planet-related educational materials for teachers to go along with the new project.

"At Uwingu, we think that it?s important that kids learn, as well as play," said Uwingu education officer Emily CoBabe. "So we want to make Uwingu a place where teachers can stop by to get the best and most up-to-date space education materials."

A new Nippon Ichi game is going to be released on PSN: today NIS America announced that Clan Of Champions will be available in North America on Playstation Network on November 20. The European version will come at a later date.

Successful Sales Management: Case Study Developing A Sales ...


Sometimes the effort developing a sales strategy comes to nothing, because it proves there isn't a business opportunity. ?That seems bad news for the entrepreneur. ?The exciting idea really doesn't seem too interesting anymore. ?On the other hand its great news. If it avoids all the costs, losses and disappointments of a failed startup, that's a bullet dodged. The owner survives to start something with a better chance of success.

We have our own case study, which illustrates how the exercise of defining a sales strategy uncovers a lot of risk factors which might not otherwise come to light, until its too late.

We've recently been involved in a new venture - a consortium with external funding to develop an electromechanical device for diagnosing Parkinsons Disease. ?We ?had an opportunity to be the exclusive distributor. ?At first glance this seemed a licence to print money, but once we'd done the hard yards researching, and validating, and planning, it didn't appeal so much. ?Our failure to find a plausible sales strategy stopped us in our tracks, and saved us a great deal of money and time and effort in the process. Just how we go about developing a sales strategy is explained in Reengineering Sales Management. ?There's even a template people can use to get themselves started. ?But here we'll summarise the theory, to save time and get on with the story.

First the market background.

The global market for medical devices is eye wateringly profitable, and growing like crazy. As populations age, the number of neurological disease sufferers automatically expands. ?Health services can't cope with the numbers now - a situation which can only get worse. ?There's a world shortage of specialist clinicians to diagnose patients. ?High profile charities work hard at increasing awareness of the diseases. ?There's a lot of interest in Parkinsons Disease, it's sufferers and its treatment.

That sounds like fertile territory for an ambitious sales organisation. ?Now we know something of the market, lets figure out how we might sell the product. ?To do that we need to define the unique value proposition, who will buy it, why they'll buy. and how they'll buy it. ?That sounds easy enough, but is it?

We've got a sort of value proposition, but need to work out a lot of other stuff before we can make it unique, and meaningful. Our first questions are who will be the customer? ?Who is going to benefit? ?Who will have the budget? Who will have the authority to sign a contract?

Here's where the problems start. ?

Who is going to benefit from use of the device to achieve a diagnosis? Perhaps the patient? Perhaps the specialist? Perhaps the hospital administrator? ?Potentially each might benefit in a peripheral way. If the clinicians can cure the problem early, they'll improve quality of life for the patient, increase the efficiency of specialist clinicians, and reduce the hospital administrators costs. ?That sounds OK. ?We might persuade patients to insist clinicians use the technology, but the patient isn't going to buy it. ?We might persuade the clinician its a useful tool to improve patient care, but she doesn't have the authority to buy it. ?We might persuade the admin people there's a business case to support the clinical case - more efficient use of scarce resource frees up assets to treat more patients - but they don't have the money to buy it. And they won't find it, unless the clinician convinces them of savings elsewhere.

This is starting to look awfully complicated. But that gets worse when we find out there is no cure for Parkinsons Disease. ?The doctors can only treat the symptoms, so the diagnosis is less relevant than it might seem. ?Who is going to spend money on equipment for diagnosis when the symptoms are the problem which can be treated, not the cause? ?

As if that isn't bad enough, we then find out most clinicians prefer to delay the only available treatment as long as possible, in some cases until 80% of the patient's normal function has been lost. ?They delay treatment because it has significant debilitating side effects, and ultimately makes the patient more sick than they would otherwise be. ?At this point our unique value proposition - early confirmation of Parkinsons Disease - might be valid, but its not interesting. ?Who cares??

To cut a long story short, we don't have a meaningful unique value proposition, we can't identify a customer, and we can't find a reason why they would buy the product if we could.

Then we get to the question of how they'll buy it, which really seals the deal as far as we're concerned.

In the medical devices business sales reps call on clinicians (who are mostly busy seeing patients) in order to persuade them to want the technology and ask the administrators to buy it for them. ?Then the rep calls on the administrator asking for the order. ?Then the administrator asks the clinician to justify the cost, which is impossible, because nothing will change as a result of the investment.

The medical devices industry is awesomely profitable, because the barriers to entry are so high. ?One of those barriers is cost of sale, because of the need for personal calls by sales rep. Another barrier is the capital required to fund regulatory approval for the product, expensive marketing and a high quality sales team. A stand alone product can't generate enough margin to cover the cost of sale. ?That means every sale is going to lose money. ?There is no business case to justify any investment in this opportunity, let alone the $20 million we figured was the minimum required.

We're sales guys, not doctors. We aren't experts in medical devices, and we have no specific knowledge of neurological diseases and treatments. ?Everything we discovered came from researching the internet, and talking to experts wherever we could. Once we developed the full picture, we shared it with consortium colleagues and asked them to correct any errors. ?They didn't.?

You'll understand why we decided to walk away from this opportunity, and save our money for more interesting ideas.

What Could the Future of Work Look Like? | Emergent By Design

What are the changing patterns of work? What are the shifts in perspective and attitude? What do the organization and worker of the future look like?

I?ve been mulling on these questions recently, and wanted to invite a dialogue about it. Below is a synthesis of ideas from a number of reports and articles (references at bottom of post) to get a sense of where we?re at in this narrative and where we might be headed.

From Job Security to Employability

The 20th century pattern of employment featured a steady, permanent job with predictably rising pay. In order to achieve maximum efficiency in that predominantly industrial paradigm, fully anticipated behavior was desirable ? Meaning, people were viewed as cogs in a system: not necessarily paid to think, but paid to follow rules. They were designed to be interchangeable, and paid more for clock time than specific outcomes.

That model includes characteristics like:

  • full-time exclusive employment relationship
  • paid for amount of time spent at work
  • common location
  • stable hierarchies
  • evaluation primarily through the judgment of superiors
  • what and how the job is done is prescribed

A sense of security and safety came from the organization, knowing that hard work, loyalty and dedication were a good formula to get you into a lifetime job with regular pay raises, promotions and a good pension at retirement.

In the 21st century pattern, it?s accepted that we?ll have many careers over our lifetime, that movement may be lateral or transitional instead of just linear, and that ?job security? will have to come through the individual. We?ll have to take more responsibility for our careers and the direction of our lives through self-awareness and assessment of our strengths and weaknesses, continuous learning, self-improvement, and the ability to be flexible and adaptive to change.

Some characteristics include:

  • part-time, flextime, crowdsourced, project-based swarm teams, free agents
  • paid to harvest new ideas and tap into community knowledge
  • working from home & participating in virtual enterprises
  • flattening hierarchies
  • peer evaluation, external evaluation, new metrics like reputation, degree of connectedness, and influence in a network
  • employees participate in informal communities of practice, work and learning

From Work/Life ?Balance? to Work/Life Integration

Work, life, and play used to be more clearly demarcated, and we?d try to ?balance? these various identities. Now the edges are blurring and overlapping. We?re trying to close the gap so that ?who we are? and ?what we do? aren?t different things. We?re rediscovering the need to feel that what we do matters, provides meaning and purpose, and makes us feel that we?re a part of something bigger than ourselves.

Instead of balance, we?re looking for an integration where work can become a reflection of a certain way of life, and also a vehicle for satisfying our personal and social motivations.

The Courtship Between Worker & Organization

The interplay between 21st century workers and organizations is a matchmaking dance, where both parties seek to find an alignment of vision and values.

Firms want a talented workforce whose members passionately buy into the vision. Workers want to be inspired to contribute their best to an organization with clarity of mission and purpose.

Firms want to empower and create value for the employee, so the employee will be motivated to interact with customers. Workers want to feel a sense of ownership and control in how they structure their work, and an environment where knowledge and decision-making is decentralized.

Firms want leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset that can leverage new business models. Workers of tomorrow want to be able to cultivate certain dispositions and skill sets are not necessarily prized in conventional work environments, and the support of a management team that can play the role of coach and facilitator.

Both sides of this equation seem to value personal accountability, growth, learning, and continuous improvement. Both seem to be looking for a people-centric approach.

So How Do We Create this Holistic Human Workforce?

I wonder what the dialogue might sound like to kick off this future-shaping.

The organization might say:

?Ok, look. Things are moving fast these days and constantly changing, and our challenges are complex. We need totally rethink our approach to business and transform the marketplace. We need to figure out how to add value for customers that?s totally differentiable, compelling and urgent. We need to question the very nature of the organization and how it?s managed. And we need a stellar team of people who can make this happen ? people with courage and imagination.

Please drop your sense of entitlement ? we can?t guarantee you lifelong employment. In fact, we don?t even know if we?ll be here tomorrow. We?re moving forward into a shape and location that we?ve never been, so we need people with vision who can take responsibility for the future. The territory we?re entering doesn?t have regimented work processes and things will not be clear-cut, so hopefully you?re comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity.

Accept total responsibility for your outcomes. That includes managing your own learning, skills development and career management. Be creative, be resourceful, take initiative, throw obsolete beliefs out the door, and be completely receptive to new ideas. Let?s go.?

The worker response might be something like:

?Alright. I?m willing to adopt a self-employed attitude, and assume I?m working with (not for) you. I?ll embrace the fact that we?re living in a networked world, that digital technologies allow for rapid information sharing and communication, and that innovation happens when many of us can interact efficiently across these mediums. I?ll work on my emotional intelligence and ability to communicate and manage conflict. I?ll invest in myself and make a commitment to continuous learning, and seek new knowledge by participating in a community of practice. I?ll face my fears and start the process of changing myself, and value enhancement as well as advancement. ?I?ll bring my full Self to the table, and I?ll keep upgrading ? my attitude, my craftsmanship, my performance. Support me in that.?

So if we pretend that these are the types of forward-focused mindsets that are defining the future of work, what might the next round of questions be?

I wonder:

What if we treated business itself as a platform to support personal and social learning?

How can we create nurturing, immersive environments for workers to satisfy their dispositions and talents?

What dispositions do we want to cultivate?

How can we develop a structure for lifelong learning, mentorship and development?

How can we create motivational feedback loops to improve personal performance and modify behavior?

How can we create working environments that increase human freedom and agency to make decisions and be self-directed?

What else should we be asking as we move forward?

Saving Ethnic Studies: A Conversation with Sean Arce ? Wesleying

Sean Arce co-founded and directed a K-12 Mexican American Studies?program in the Tucson Unified School District as an alternative to the?non-inclusive history program. It was the only K-12 Mexican American?Studies program in the country and was incredibly successful,?receiving national acclaim such as ?one of the most significant and?successful public school initiatives on the teaching of history in the?United States? and ?a resounding academic success and affirmation of?the diversity of our nation and our community.? The Mexican American?Studies program not only broadened students? understanding of their?nation?s history and celebrated ethnic diversity in the classroom, it?significantly closed the racial achievement gap in the district.

However, when proposed legislation threatened to end the program for??promoting ethnic resentment,? Mr. Arce lost his job for speaking out?against the discriminatory law. The program was subsequently banned.?Mr. Arce and others have since been working to restore the program, a?struggle that is documented in the film Precious Knowledge.

Why Some People Can Never Let Go: Why Commitment is Not Always Perfect

When you say "I love you" to someone, it is supposed to be forever, at least, that is the plan for most couples. But, sometimes, even in the best of relationships, commitment is always forever and occasionally there comes the need to say goodbye. What happens when one person decides to walk away but the other person decides that they are going to hold on to the embers of a dying or dead love? It can be harder for the person who will not let go, especially if they do not want to face up to the facts.

Take a young couple from New York as an example. They got together while working at the same company and things were going well until some major changes came along. First, she was offered an executive position which would require a move from their home state to one of two different locations. In the midst of making this major life decision, the couple also found they were expecting a child. They agreed that on where they would move. They also agreed that eventually she would either return to work full time or would agree to have a second child. And, so, they moved and the child was born.

Fast forward nearly a decade: the man has had several different jobs at varying levels in the retail field, unable to stay put in any one position for very long. She has put off the concept of having that second child for as long as possible but now he is really starting to push her to get back to their original plans. They are fighting nearly all of the time now, acrimonious fights that spring up out of nowhere and spiral quickly out of control. Finally, she has had enough and she asks him to leave.

He is convinced that this is only a temporary thing, that she will need him to come back quickly. After all, he is sure that she cannot accomplish anything on her own, discounting the fact that she had been in a supervisory position over him when they met and had continued her education even after things had started going bad between them. What he does not realize is that things really are over between them, no matter how much he wishes and wills them to be better. He will be unable to move on with his own life, unable to accomplish any of the things that she has managed until he digests the fact that they are no longer a couple and never will be again.
