Joe Mande: The Minnesota Timberwolves Fan's Guide to the Five Stages of Post-Lottery Grief Andrew Sharp: Winners and Losers From the NBA Lottery : The Cleveland Show

I was one of eight or 10 media members who got to watch the lottery last night from inside the television studio where the NBA draft order is filmed. It?s not quite as cool as being in the secret locked-down room where the lottery actually happens, but it?s an experience ? a bizarre event filled with odd moments, awkward silences, uncomfortable people, team representatives wearing ridiculous amounts of makeup, endless commercial breaks where everyone on the dais just sort of sits there, Jay Bilas, and other strangeness. Some quick observations from TV land:

? The Cleveland Cavaliers contingent at these things is just very weird. They make a party of the lottery, and the party treads the line between quirky and unseemly. They bring at least a dozen people every year, and there is always a local celebrity or two among them; Bernie Kosar came last year, and he was on the list again this year. He didn?t show, but a rapper named Machine Gun Kelly, who does not know how to tie a tie, filled the celebrity void.

I had never heard of Machine Gun Kelly, which is not surprising. I am 35 and unhip. He is 23 and something like hip. When another reporter told me Machine Gun Kelly was in the Cleveland group, I thought he was making some kind of joke about how everyone affiliated with the Cavaliers wears maroon bow ties to the lottery every season, giving them an old-timey look. (The real Machine Gun Kelly, a prohibition gangster, almost certainly didn?t wear dapper bow ties, but the 1920s are often stereotyped as glamorous, and I couldn?t think of any other reason someone at the NBA draft lottery would make a Machine Gun Kelly reference.)

Nope. Machine Gun Kelly, MGK, is a real Cleveland-based rapper who needed help tying his bow tie on the private jet the Cavaliers group took to New York on Tuesday. He told me after the lottery that he has replaced LeBron as Cleveland?s cultural touchstone. ?One bounced and one stayed,? he said. ?It was an easy choice. Machine Gun Kelly is like the voice of Cleveland.?

MGK also does the music that plays over the Cavs' starting-lineup intros, which is how he got to know the team.

? When the Cavaliers leapfrogged into the top two picks, the group, seated about 25 feet to my right, broke out in loud applause and some muffled shouting. When NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver announced Orlando had ?won? the no. 2 pick, the Cleveland guys didn?t even wait a beat before celebrating. They screamed and clapped. One young man, a season-ticket holder who had won a contest to join the group, stood up, raised his arms, extended his index fingers in the ?We?re no. 1? gesture, and mugged for the cameras as if a sports team had actually accomplished something that involved skill. A second man I didn?t recognize, a middle-aged man with slicked back hair, expensive-looking thick glasses (sort of like the ones Jim Cutler wears now on Mad Men), and a very loud baritone voice began straight-up shouting ? ?YEAH! YEAH!? and ?ATTA BOY, NICKY!,? the latter directed at Nick Gilbert, son of Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, and perhaps the biggest lottery celebrity since Elgin Baylor. The ?atta boy!? was particularly hilarious. You?d normally reserve that expression to praise someone who had completed a difficult task ? for a job well done, or the culmination of hard work, practice, and the honing of skills.

The Cavaliers were going bananas over their ability to lose an incredible number of NBA games and then perform well in a contest that involves sitting in a chair while watching officials suck Ping-Pong balls out of an air pressure machine.

It was all in good fun, I realize, and winning the no. 1 pick is a thing worth celebrating. But it has been a little off-putting over the last three seasons to watch Cleveland turn a loser?s event into a ritualized frat party. There just aren?t many teams who would react this way, for a variety of reasons. Some are more buttoned-up and business-oriented. Some are legitimately ashamed to be there, or at least sad about it. And some have handed control of things to analytics-oriented people who understand and internalize the idea that the lottery is really a very silly random drawing based on set probabilities. It?s just math.

? Three of the player representatives ? Bradley Beal, Kevin Love, and Damian Lillard ? were seated consecutively on the dais, which meant they got to make small talk among themselves during the frequent ad breaks, instead of having to force it with a GM or team president. They mostly just checked their cell phones, but the seating arrangement paid off big time during the Cavaliers' raucous celebration. Lillard smirked, looked at the floor, and shook his head, clearly astonished at the reaction, and muttered something out of the side of his mouth to Love. Minnesota?s franchise player chuckled in response and gave the Cleveland group a bit of a side-eye. He politely confirmed to me afterward that he and Lillard were indeed trying to absorb what was happening.

? Love also said he?s very close to 100 percent, if not all the way there. He?s excited about the Timberwolves.

? I had to know who that shouting baritone guy was, so I approached him during a quiet moment after he was through the requisite photo shoots. I figured he was a Gilbert business associate who had no role on the basketball side of things. Nope. Turns out he?s Tony Rizzo, 52, a local ESPN radio host in Cleveland whom Gilbert invited at the last minute after doing an interview on Rizzo?s show. This blew me away. Rizzo is a journalist, but he was the loudest fan in the room. He?s been covering Cleveland sports since 1987, he told me, and he had no ethical qualms about taking off his journalism hat and replacing it with a (metaphorical) Cavaliers beer helmet. ?Absolutely not,? he said. ?Absolutely not. I?m just a Cleveland sports fan, bro, from way back when. I?m very happy for the Cavs and Dan [Gilbert] tonight. Its been a tough time since LeBron left. It really has been. I speak for all of Cleveland when I say we believe in Dan, we believe in the Cavaliers, and we?re really looking forward to the future.?

And on the celebration: ?I didn?t mean to disrespect anyone.?

Rizzo said he knew Nick Gilbert would bring good luck after playing euchre against him, and losing, 10-2, on the private jet the group took to New York. Yup.

? The best moment of the lottery, every season: when the team rep who was in the locked-down room during the actual drawing, and thus knows the results an hour before the world, sprints up to the studio after the televised drawing and celebrates with the rest of his contingent. It is agonizing, some of those folks have told me, to be in that room, results in hand, and watch close friends and colleagues sweat out the anxiety on stage.

For the third straight year, the Cavaliers tabbed Jeff Cohen, Gilbert?s no. 2 guy and the vice-chairman of the Cavs, for secret room duty. The real drawing happens quickly. Each team rep sits at a round table with sheets of paper listing every four-number combination the team owns. (There are 1,001 such combinations.) If your team is in the top three or four of the initial order, you have a lot of combinations; the top team, the Magic this season, has 250. Many of a team?s combinations begin with the same number, so that executives have some idea about what numbers are good and bad before the drawing.

But there is some overlap, and the balls come up quickly, one after another. Executives scramble with some franticness to track the combinations. Cohen told me that two seasons ago he did not realize at first that Cleveland had won the lottery, because he was looking at the Cavaliers? own four-number combinations, and not the combos linked to the pick Cleveland had obtained from the Clippers in the Baron Davis?Mo Williams deal ? the pick that improbably won them the lottery.

And last season, the Hornets and Cavs shared the first three numbers of the winning combination. Both Cohen and Dell Demps, the Hornets/Pelicans GM and secret room rep, knew before the last ball came up what numbers would make them winners. Demps told me last season he initially thought the last ball, a ?7,? was a ?1,? which would have meant defeat for the Hornets. He slumped in his chair before realizing his mistake and delivering an understated fist pump under the table.

Cohen told me last night he knew the Cavaliers were in business as soon as the no. 3 shot out of the machine as the first ball drawn. The Cavaliers were no. 3 in the draft order, meaning a lot of their four-number combinations included that number. ?I knew when a ?1? didn?t come up, we were sitting in the catbird seat,? he told me. ?We all went in with a good feeling this time. Last year we all wanted to win, but we didn?t really have that good feeling. When I went in there today, there was just something ? the basketball gods were shining down on us. It felt right.?

? Their celebration was rowdy, but the Cavaliers made it clear they did not plan to be at this crazy event next season ? that the ritual, with the bow ties and the celebrities, must end. Nick Gilbert made that vow on the broadcast, and Cohen echoed it in chatting with me afterward: ?We?re gonna be in the playoffs,? he said. ?You?re going to be watching us play after this event.? (That would mean, obviously, that the Cavaliers would be in the conference finals. Cohen was sort of chuckling as he said this.)

? There is no question the Cavaliers are going to listen to offers for this pick. The Cavs have three top-four picks already on the roster, the nos. 1 and 19 picks (the latter via the Lakers) in this draft, two of the first three picks in the second round, and three more future first-round picks from other teams, including a potential lottery pick from the Grizzlies. They almost literally have too many draft picks. (A sidenote: The future first-rounder the Cavs stole from the Kings in the Omri Casspi?J.J. Hickson deal is top-12 protected next year and top-10 protected through 2017, meaning the Cavaliers only get the pick if it falls outside the top 10 in those years. It says a lot about the Kings that you read those protections and think, ?Man, the Kings are so bad, the Cavaliers might not actually ever get that pick.? If the Kings haven?t sent the pick by 2017, they will send a second-rounder instead ? a huge downgrade, obviously.)

They also might have the cleanest cap sheet in the league, with about $20 million in cap room and zero fully guaranteed deals yet on the books for 2014-15. (That last bit will change once Cleveland makes its picks next month and executes no-brainer options on Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, and Dion Waiters.) Waiters and Thompson are promising players, and the idea of pairing Irving with a potential Tyson Chandler type in Nerlens Noel is appealing. But there are a lot of unknowns in that equation, and the Cavs will think hard about whether it?s best to exchange some of those unknowns for a young-ish known franchise player type who might become available via trade. Next summer?s unrestricted free agency class has some glittery names, including LeBron, but some of those names (including LeBron) have various option clauses in their contracts, and Cleveland?s record of drawing big-time free agents isn?t exactly robust. The two names you?ll hear most often, Love and LaMarcus Aldridge, aren?t eligible for unrestricted free agency until (at the earliest) after the 2014-15 season. That?s a long time to hoard cap room.

The Cavs have a war chest now, much like the one Houston piled up for use in the James Harden deal.

? The other team whose calculus changed a bit last night was Washington. The Wiz view themselves a playoff team next season, and are confident they?d have made it this season had John Wall been healthy from the jump. They also already have six players who will be in either their second, third, or fourth seasons in the league next season ? a lot of really, really young guys. In other words: A lot of folks around the league expected Washington to shop its first-round pick for some veteran help when that pick was slated in the mid-lottery. It will be interesting to see what the Wiz do now that they're picking third.

? Last thing: A league official told me last night the league plans to stream the actual Ping-Pong ball drawing on its website at some point. That?s a good move. It?s short and only semi-boring, and shining a light on the secret room will put to rest the lunatic fringe conspiracy theories that crop up every season.

CSN: Vogelsong out 6 weeks with fractured hand

Giants starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong fractured his throwing hand in Monday night?s game after being hit by a pitch in the fifth inning against the Washington Nationals.

Vogelsong was in the middle of easily his best start of the season when he swung at an inside pitch from Craig Stammen. The ball appeared to hit him squarely on the knuckles of his right hand, and Vogelsong was in obvious pain. He left the game and was replaced by pinch hitter Nick Noonan.

Nicole Vogelsong tweeted an injury update on her husband during Monday's game:

The Giants led 6-0 at the time and Vogelsong had allowed just three hits. No National had advanced past second base. The right-hander entered the night with a 8.06 ERA and was in desperate need of a good start.

Archie Comics' gay kiss a poke at real controversy

It's just a quick kiss, but it's a long step forward for Archie Comics' only openly gay character Kevin Keller.

The Riverdale teen finds his life turned upside down after locking lips with his boyfriend, Devon, in Pop Tate's diner, drawing the ire of at least one disapproving Riverdale mom.

The woman "gets very offended and kind of pitches a bit of a fit," said Dan Parent, who writes and draws the issue, "Kevin Keller" No. 10 that is released Aug. 7.

"Kevin is kind of used to that, but Veronica records the whole thing and of course uploads it to the Riverdale equivalent of YouTube and that starts a bit of a debate," said Parent.

For Archie Comics it's a bit of art imitating life. Parent said he wrote the story after efforts to remove a comic magazine showing Keller getting married drew at complaints. One Million Moms, a project of The American Family Association, asked Toys R Us not to display "Life With Archie" No. 16 near its checkout aisles. Toys R Us did not, and the issue went on to sell out its print run.

Parent called the new story a "playful poke" at the protest.

Keller debuted in "Veronica" No. 202 in September 2010. It resulted in Archie Comics' first-ever second printing. It was quickly followed by a four-issue miniseries and the current monthly title.

Publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said the fact that any kiss is being shown in the pages of an Archie Comics book is a step in and of itself.

"There aren't that many on-panel kisses in the pages of Archie, but you often see the lipstick on Archie's face afterward," he said.

Goldwater said Keller's character has let the company weave in contemporary issues to its imaginary world.

"We certainly pride ourselves on being contemporary, but that's not the reason why we're showing 'The Kiss.' Just like when Kevin first told Jughead he was gay, it was in the natural course of conversation," said Goldwater. "We are creating this in the same way. It's just part of the story."

Neil Armstrong's 'Heartbeat,' Apollo Joystick Pulled from Auction

The joystick controller used to steer the Apollo 11 spacecraft to the moon, the original recording of Neil Armstrong's heartbeat when he took humankind's first "small step" onto the lunar surface, and the complete tool kit carried on NASA's final manned moon mission won't be auctioned later this month, despite international headlines that heralded the rare space artifacts' sale.

RR Auction, a New Hampshire-based online auction house that specializes in autographs but has in recent years held space history-themed memorabilia sales, had featured the now-withdrawn Apollo-era artifacts in videos and releases issue to promote their current auction ending on May 23.

The rare moon memorabilia was pulled from the sale after NASA requested time to look into the artifacts' ownership, according to RR. The agency's general counsel wanted to insure that the items were no longer federal property. [NASA's Apollo 11 Moon Landing in Pictures]

"Every once in awhile we are asked to withdraw lots when ownership issues are brought to our attention," said Bobby Livingston, RR's executive vice president. "This happens in most collecting fields, and is not an exclusive issue in just the space artifact category."

"That being said, though we're disappointed, we're working with our consignors to provide additional provenance and clear title on these items," Livingston added.

Star lots

Prior to their withdrawal from the auction, the Apollo 11 controller, Armstrong electrocardiogram (EKG) record and Apollo 17 toolkit had been promoted as some of the sale's star lots, leading off news stories published worldwide. [Neil Armstrong: An American Icon Remembered (Photos)]

"Want a Little Piece of Astronaut Neil Armstrong's Heart?" TIME magazine touted. "Neil Armstrong's EKG from Moon Landing Being Auctioned Off," the New York Daily News wrote. "Moonwalkers Sell Right Stuff in $1 Million Space Auction" reported Bloomberg Businessweek, while the sci-fi blog io9 quipped, "Win These Bids And Build Your Own Historic Spacecraft."

The joystick, known as the rotation hand controller, was a part of the command module "Columbia" that flew Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon in July 1969.

"The premiere item of this auction is this Apollo 11 hand controller grip," Livingston said in a video released by RR in late April. "According to irrefutable evidence confirmed by our experts, this rotational hand controller would have been on the right side of the [command module's] couch, which would have been used by either Aldrin or Collins."

"It's awe inspiring because you can't get anything from the command module," he added.

NASA removed the controller and others like it from the spacecraft to be mounted for their post-flight presentation to the Apollo 11 crew, but the astronauts reportedly reneged. Instead, the joysticks sat inside a safe at Johnson Space Center in Houston until Bill Whipkey, head of the center's machine shop, was retiring and told to clean out the safe and throw out its contents.

Realizing the history he held in his hands, Whipkey took the joysticks home, where they were kept in a storage box until about 10 years ago.

RR's auction is the second time that the translational hand controller has been listed for sale. In April 2004, the same mounted joystick commanded a hammer price of $75,000. The winning bidder of that sale, which was organized by a California-based auction house, consigned the controller to RR to sell now.

The Armstrong EKG strip was also first sold in 2004 at the same auction as the controller, for a high bid of $12,000.

The six-inch long paper record of Armstrong's heartbeat at the moment of his historic "giant leap for all mankind" was retained by NASA's medical administration manager after the mission, cut into five pieces and then presented to the members of his medical team.

The Apollo 17 tool kit, believed to be the last complete set of moon-flown tools in existence, was first auctioned in May 2000, for a reported $35,000. RR listed the kit in its May 2012 auction, when it received bids of nearly $90,000 but it didn't sell, having not reached its reserve price.

The 16-piece tool set, which includes a crescent wrench, torque screwdriver and tether, was flown on the command module "America" in 1972. According to information found by RR after NASA requested the kit be held, NASA may have been released it from government property in 1982.

Astronaut-owned versus astronaut-used

Had any of the three pulled lots come from an astronaut's collection, its sale would likely be proceeding now.

In September 2012, Congress passed legislation awarding the Apollo-era astronauts with title to their mission-saved mementos. The law came as a result of similar inquires by NASA into the astronauts' own attempts at auctioning their space-flown souvenirs.

RR's auction does include a number of lots consigned or originally from the Apollo astronauts' collections, including Apollo 13 pilot Fred Haise, Apollo 15 moonwalker David Scott and Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan.

"There are over 800 lots in this auction, so there is an incredible amount of rare flown artifacts and some unique signed material," Livingston said. "These type of items do not come on the market often and this is your chance to add them to your incredible space collection."

Whole-cell vaccine was more effective than acellular vaccine during CA pertussis outbreak

Whole-cell vaccine was more effective than acellular vaccine during CA pertussis outbreak

Monday, May 20, 2013

Whole-cell pertussis vaccines were more effective at protecting against pertussis than acellular pertussis vaccines during a large recent outbreak, according to a new Kaiser Permanente study published in Pediatrics.

Whole-cell pertussis vaccines, also called DTwP, were available from the 1940s to 1990s, but were associated with safety concerns that ultimately led to the development of acellular pertussis vaccines, which are also called DTaP. By the late 1990s, the United States had switched from whole-cell to acellular vaccines for all five recommended infant and childhood doses.

The study, which followed the 2010-2011 pertussis outbreak in California, examined 10- to 17-year-olds who received the recommended four pertussis-containing vaccines. The researchers evaluated the risk of pertussis during the outbreak according to the number of whole-cell and/or acellular pertussis vaccines these participants had received as infants and toddlers.

Despite high levels of vaccine coverage, pertussis epidemics have arisen every three to five years since the 1980s, with progressively higher incidence rates over time. "Studies have suggested that protection following the acellular pertussis vaccine is less enduring than following the whole-cell pertussis vaccine," said lead author Nicola Klein, MD, PhD, co-director of the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center and a pediatrician. "Although reasons for the recurrent pertussis outbreaks are complex, waning protection following five doses of acellular pertussis vaccine plays a central role, at least in recent epidemics."

The study included 138 individuals with confirmed pertussis, 899 individuals who had a lab test indicating they did not have pertussis, and 54,339 individuals who were similar to those with confirmed pertussis on sex, race/ethnicity, medical clinic, and membership status.

Increased number of acellular doses from zero to four was significantly associated with an increasing percent of positive pertussis tests. On average, individuals had a 40 percent increased risk of pertussis for each additional acellular dose received (as compared to receipt of a DTwP dose) between ages 1-24 months.

Teenagers who were vaccinated with four doses of acellular vaccines were at almost six times higher risk of pertussis than were those who had received four doses of whole-cell vaccines. Persons who received mixed whole-cell and acellular vaccines had an intermediate level of risk between those who received all whole-cell or all acellular vaccines. Those who received mixed vaccines were at nearly four times higher risk of pertussis than were those who received all whole-cell vaccines.

Earlier studies by Kaiser Permanente have shown that protection from the fifth dose of acellular pertussis vaccine wanes substantially during the five years after vaccination among children 4 to 12 years of age who have only received the acellular vaccine. The current study included only individuals born in 1999 or earlier, for whom at least five years had passed since receipt of the fifth pertussis vaccine.

Since 2005, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended boosting with reduced antigen content acellular pertussis vaccine, also known as Tdap, for persons 11 years and older. The study found that a booster dose of Tdap did not overcome the advantage in protection from pertussis seen among those who had received four doses of the whole-cell vaccine.

"The results indicate that a booster dose of Tdap does not overcome the advantage in protection from pertussis afforded to those who previously received four doses of the whole-cell vaccine," Dr. Klein said. "Despite this, boosting the newly emerging cohort of acellular pertussis vaccine-only teenagers with Tdap remains the best means currently available to help protect this group against disease."

Studies demonstrate that whole-cell and acellular pertussis vaccines administered to infants trigger different immune responses that at least partially persist through the teenage years, but long-term clinical consequences of such differences have been unknown. The results of this study, the researchers said, suggest that variations in immune responses induced by primary immunization during infancy play a central role in protection from disease years later. Additionally, the study highlights the need for new pertussis vaccines that provide both an improved safety profile and long lasting immunity.

Khaled Hosseini's 'And the Mountains Echoed' garners rave reviews

'And the Mountains Echoed,' Hosseini's third novel, is racking up huge pre-sale numbers. The book will be released tomorrow.

By Husna Haq,?Correspondent / May 20, 2013

One thing that may come as a surprise to readers of Hosseini's third novel: There?s far less "Afghanistan" and "conflict" in this book ? perhaps a deliberate decision by Hosseini to reframe the country in readers? psyches.

Early reviews are in and they?ve confirmed what we?ve known all along: Khaled Hosseini?s latest novel, ?And the Mountains Echoed,? is a hit. It?s also a surprisingly nuanced, morally complex, exquisitely told tear-jerker.

Take it from the Washington Post?s book reviewer, Marcela Valdes.

?I?m not an easy touch when it comes to novels, but Hosseini?s new book, 'And the Mountains Echoed,' had tears dropping from my eyes by Page 45,? she writes, positing that Hosseini?s ?secret ingredient might be intense emotion.?

Hosseini?s third book, ?And the Mountains Echoed,? hits stores Tuesday, six years after his previous two books captivated millions of readers and spent years on the bestseller list. His 2003 debut novel, ?The Kite Runner,? was published in 70 countries and spent almost two years on bestseller lists. ?A Thousand Splendid Suns? also became a bestseller in 2007. Together, the two books have sold more than 38 million copies.

?And the Mountains Echoed? isn't due out until tomorrow but pre-orders of the book, in both print and e-book versions, have already exceeded those of "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by almost 95 percent on Amazon.com.

Like the previous two, Hosseini?s latest novel is a heart-wrenching story. ?And the Mountains Echoed? is set partly in Afghanistan, but action also takes place in California, Paris, and the Greek Islands. Early reviews have called it a story about family, separation, and sibling relationships. It begins with an Afghan tale about a horrific monster called a div who comes to an Afghan village to demand the sacrifice of a child. The consequences of the resulting sacrifice of a favored son echo through the lives of all the characters explored in the book, most importantly siblings Abdullah and Pari.

Unlike ?The Kite Runner? and ?A Thousand Splendid Suns,? ?And the Mountains Echoed? is constructed as a series of stories, each set in a different place and time and told from a different point of view.

?In less skillful hands, this structure might seem more like a compilation of short stories than a novel,? writes the Post?s Valdes. ?But Hosseini carefully divvies up details about the circumstances preceding and following Abdullah and Pari?s fateful afternoon, giving the book a satisfying sense of momentum and consequence.?

One thing that may come as a surprise to readers: There?s far less "Afghanistan" and "conflict" in this novel. It appears to be a deliberate decision by Hosseini to reframe the country in readers? psyches as any other setting and not as a country defined by war, conflict, and turmoil.

?I hope a day will come when we write about Afghanistan, where we can speak about Afghanistan in a context outside of the wars and the struggles of the last 30 years,? he told NPR. ?In some way I think this book is an attempt to do that.?

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active?

Galaxy S4 Active Galaxy S4 Active

New pics purport to show water-resistant, ruggedized device with S4-class specs

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has long been rumored, with publications including the Wall Street Journal reporting that Samsung will release a ruggedized, water and dust-resistant version of its flagship phone this summer. Today GSMArena has obtained pics of a device that would certainly seem to fit that bill. The shots seem to show a large-screened device with a sturdy red back and physical menu, back and keys on the front.

A further image confirms the GT-i9295 model number previously associated with the Galaxy S4 Active, along with the presence of a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 CPU. GSMArena reports that the screen is a 5-inch 1080p SuperAMOLED unit, just like the vanilla GS4. The shot of the back also reveals a remarkably thin handset, in contrast to most water-resistant phones, which are smaller and chunkier. So it looks like Samsung hasn't skimped on hardware specs in creating this ruggedized beast.

The Galaxy S4 Active might be just one of several Galaxy S4 models to make its way onto the market in the coming months. The Galaxy S4 Mini has been extensively leaked, and recent leaks also point to a larger "S4 Mega" variant.

Would you be in the market for a reinforced, waterproof phone with these kinds of specs? Hit the comments and let us know.

Musicians, social media and privacy - Artipot

In today's world where social media platforms give everyone the chance to have their own personal publicity machine it can be a nightmare for new artists to get their work heard. To cut through all the internet noise musicians are forced to exploit every channel of publicity at their disposal. After all, no matter how much talent you have you'll never hit the big time by circulating your material around a small group of friends and family. You won't make it anywhere in show-business by playing the odd gig at your local watering-hole, hoping that some big-shot producer will spot your talent. That being said, there are many pitfalls to avoid when using social media for self-promotion.

When social media is utilized properly it can be an effective weapon in the arsenal of an aspiring musician. To understand the power of social networking as a marketing tool just consider the story of how the Arctic Monkeys rose to fame. They started out as a garage band distributing free CDs to the few fans who showed up at their gigs. But when they established a presence online, especially on Myspace, they quickly built up a respectable following. Through their online platform they were able to share music and information about the band with their fans without recourse to a record label. Their popularity grew and before they even released an official album they were performing at venues normally reserved for well-established acts. When they eventually signed to Domino Records in 2006 their debut album became the fastest selling album in UK history.

There is no doubt that the internet has changed the face of the music industry. Social media has allowed new artists to tap into audiences that would otherwise be unreachable to them. But even for highly successful artists the internet has dramatically changed the way in which they interact with their fans. Twitter and Facebook have made these interactions more intimate than ever before and artists are pressured into embracing this online intimacy simply to keep up with the competition. For decades popular artists have had to endure intense public scrutiny, but the rise of social media has taken things to another level by allowing celebrities to share the minutiae of their daily lives with the world.

While there are some benefits for artists in communicating through the Twitter sphere I know I'm not alone in thinking that it can be detrimental to one's artistic persona. Some artists work hard to cultivate mystique around themselves and their art. Such artists live and breathe their art - it is difficult to tell where they end and their art begins. Yet, in today's world where musicians are encouraged to disclose the mundane trivia of their day-to-day lives it is increasingly difficult to be and remain an enigma.

Bob Dylan famously invented an entire back story for himself when he arrived as an unknown in New York's music scene, and he has continued to add to his mythology throughout his career. I wonder if he would have been able to do this if he had been starting out in the Twitter age. Tom Waits is another artist who shrouds himself in mystery and keeps his private life under wraps. He is elusive in interviews, making outlandish claims such as 'I was born in the backseat of a yellow cab in a hospital loading zone'. He once said that 'the truth is overrated'. These two artists embody the antithesis of the social networking generation. They are rendered more intriguing by their secretiveness and eccentricity.

Tom Waits is extremely critical of the way in which the internet has encroached on the music business. In a video launch for his last album Bad as Me he lamented the lack of privacy which is the flipside of mass communication. He had wanted to keep the title of his album a secret until the launch but it was leaked online. 'It seems there's no such thing as private anymore,' he says in the video.

There is also a danger when starting out as a musician of sharing too much personal information or alienating your friends and fans by bombarding them with too much promotional material. Most of us have friends in bands who clog up our newsfeeds with links to their music and announcements about band activities. It can be very tiresome and off-putting.

So caution is advised when using social media to get noticed as a musician. But what do the musicians out there have to say on the issue. Is social media a blessing or a curse to the music business? Have you had a breakthrough in your musical aspirations as a result of making good use of the internet, or do you know someone who has? I would love to hear from anyone who has thoughts on the matter.

New salt study: We're still drowning in salt

New salt study: Despite warnings from the CDC, most producers of fast foods and processed foods didn't lower the salt content in their foods between 2005 and 2001, say researchers.

By Rachael Rettner,?My Health News Daily Senior Writer / May 14, 2013

Boston Market restaurants, like this one seen today in Alexandria, Va., have removed salt shakers from restaurant tables and placed them with other condiments on the beverage dispenser table. Most Americans still eat way too much salt, says a new study, not just from salt shakers but because of sodium in processed foods.

Despite recent calls for food manufacturers to cut back on salt in their products, sodium levels in processed and restaurant foods have changed little in recent years, a new salt study suggests.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The study, conducted by the advocacy organization Center for Science in the Public Interest, reviewed the sodium content of 402 processed foods sold at supermarkets, and 78 fast foods sold at chain restaurants.

Between 2005 and 2011, the sodium content of processed foods declined, on average, by 3.5 percent, and the sodium content of fast foods increased by 2.6 percent. Both of these changes were so small that they could have been due to chance, said study researcher Dr. Stephen Havas, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Currently, 9 in 10 Americans eat too much salt, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The government recommends people limit their salt intake to 2,300 milligrams per day. (For those who are 51 years or older, African-American, have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney diseases, the recommendation is 1,500 mg per day.)

"That?s nearly impossible for people to do right now, given how much salt is in restaurant and processed foods," Havas said. The average American takes in about 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Too much sodium in the diet raises blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the CDC says.

Overall, the amount of salt we consume from processed and fast foods needs to decline by at least 50 percent to have benefits for people's health, Havas said. (Most of the salt we consume is through processed and fast foods, and not from a salt shaker, the researchers say.)

The new findings suggest that change happens too slowly when the food industry is asked to voluntarily reduce the sodium content of its foods, Havas said. Instead, the Food and Drug Administration should take steps to limit the amount of sodium allowed in different categories of food, he said.

High sodium foods

Some of the saltiest foods in the study were smoked bacon (1,803 mg of sodium per 100-gram serving), Caesar salad dressing (1,079 mg) and hot dogs (927 mg).

And a fast food meal of chicken strips and fries contained, on average, 1,239 mg of salt in 2011.

The study did not include products labeled as low sodium or sodium-free because the intent of the study was to focus on regular foods that had ample opportunity to reduce sodium levels between 2005 and 2011.

The researchers found wide variation in sodium levels in fast food. For instance, a medium serving of Burger King french fries had nearly twice the sodium as a medium serving of McDonald's french fries (670 mg versus 270 mg per 100 g serving).

Gap Employees Will Someday Be Replaced By This T-Shirt Folding Bot

Great news for anyone who's ever felt ignored by snooty Gap employees that seem more interested in what's happening in their headsets than their customers. To celebrate its one year anniversary, ROS Industrial put together this highlight reel of its robots in action, including a bit showing this arm deftly folding a shirt.

The demo is meant to show off the robot's capabilities, but like with most industries it also demonstrates that humans can be easily replaced. In fact, all it needs is a vintage hat and a few more tattoos and the arm should easily breeze through the interview process. [ROS Industrial via IEEE Spectrum]

PFT: Sanchez says nothing changed post-Garrard

gipson_headshot

Though the NFL has not seen a player die from on-field injuries in decades (Korey Stringer died in 2001 from heat exhaustion), tragedy often strikes at the lower levels of this sport.

It happened recently in Farmerville, Louisiana, to 17-year-old Jaleel Gipson (pictured).? A fullback, Gipson died after fracturing a vertebrate during ?Oklahoma drills? at Farmerville High School?s spring practices.? He was on life support for several days.

According to KNOE-TV, Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth has donated to the family the cost of Gipson?s funeral.? It?s a great gesture, and news of Whitworth?s generosity brought the story to our attention.

Now that we?re here, and speaking primarily as the father of a soon-to-be-17-year-old football player, why in the hell are high school kids doing Oklahoma drills in May, or ever?

The NFL stubbornly believes its rules will trickle down to the lower levels of the sport.? If so, the removal of contact from offseason workouts is trickling from Park Avenue to the Bayou at the rate of partially-frozen molasses.

Jaleel?s coach calls the incident an ?unlucky event,? which Jaleel?s family surely? would consider to be the biggest understatement of human history.? The health of our children shouldn?t be left to chance, not when the risk is avoidable.? While we realize that many frustrated, over-the-hill athletes regard high-school sports as having the same significance as the pro game, youth sports are played with children, not adults.

While the excessive zeal of some can undermine the good intentions of the many, it seems like every community has more than a few coaches whose obsession with winning clouds their judgment.? Or, in many cases, supplants it.

Try to remember that your players are our children.? They?re not your tickets to the glory days that have long since passed you by.? They?re our children.

Jaleel Gipson should be alive, and now his family has to deal for the rest of their lives with the fact that he isn?t.? While it?s very good and kind that Andrew Whitworth will pay for Jaleel?s funeral, this situation needs to spark a broader discussion in every school district about putting the same limits on offseason practices that the NFL has instituted.

That won?t bring Jaleel back, but it could protect other kids from suffering a similar fate.

Updated Mercury In Fish Advice Stalled In Health Department, Frustrating Scientists

By Toni Clarke
WASHINGTON, May 15 (Reuters) - Updated federal advice on mercury levels in fish appears to have stalled within the U.S. department of health, frustrating scientists and advocacy groups who argue that exposure to mercury may be dangerous at lower levels than previously thought.
The government last revised its mercury guidance in 2004 when it said young children, pregnant women, nursing mothers and women who might become pregnant should eat seafood but avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, which contain relatively high levels of mercury.
It recommended that this population eat up to 12 ounces a week of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury, such as shrimp, salmon, pollock and catfish. These recommendations were by and large incorporated into dietary guidelines adopted by the health and agriculture departments in 2010.
Yet the 2004 advisory was based on studies conducted 20 years ago or more, and some say the results of those studies are out of date.
"Research carried out in the past decade has both clarified the beneficial nutritional effects of fish consumption during pregnancy and found adverse effects of prenatal methylmercury exposure at very low doses, at least an order of magnitude below exposures known to be harmful when the current Advisory was written," a group of 40 or so scientists and environmental advocacy groups wrote in a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius last month.
The scientists said they understood, from discussions with government officials, that the Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency have jointly crafted an updated advisory but that the draft has stalled within the health department.
Both the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services, of which the FDA is part, said the advisory is still under review but declined to indicate how far along it is in the process or when it might be released for public comment. The EPA referred questions to HHS.
"FDA and EPA are actively engaged in updating our advice, taking into account new science and data that has emerged since the 2004 advice published," an FDA spokeswoman, Theresa Eisenman, said in a statement.
The recent letter follows a similar request last July to President Barack Obama from a group of 22 U.S. senators who urged the FDA to release the updated advisory.
In September, Sebelius responded to the senators, saying that completing the updated advisory remained a priority, but she gave no details as to when the advisory might be released.
The FDA's 2004 advisory said that for most people, there is little danger from eating fish but that "some fish and shellfish contain higher levels of mercury that may harm an unborn baby or young child's developing nervous system."
As a U.S. senator, Obama worked to prevent the release of surplus U.S. mercury into global commerce.
He introduced a bill with Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski to prohibit the transfer of elemental mercury by federal agencies and to ban U.S. exports of mercury by 2013. The Mercury Export Ban Act of 2008 was signed into law by President George W. Bush.
The National Fisheries Institute, which represents seafood producers, wholesalers, retailers and trade groups, did not immediately respond to telephone and emailed requests for comment, but on May 6 it announced it had created a new website "to correct dangerous misinformation about seafood and mercury."
"A space dedicated to debunking mercury myths is desperately needed because for years, activists have willfully fed an often lazy, unsuspecting and sympathetic media groundless warnings about eating fish," the organization's vice president, Mary Anne Hansan, said in the announcement.
The scientists who signed the letter to Sebelius want the government to give more detailed, and more nuanced, advice as to the risks and benefits associated with eating fish.
According to food safety consultant Edward Groth III, who was a signatory to the letter and published a 2012 report suggesting that the 2004 advisory is no longer adequate for protecting public health, said he expects the FDA's draft, based on discussions with its authors, to give consumers a much broader range of fish to choose from and more data to inform their decisions.
"All in all, the updated advisory seems like a significant improvement in both the quantity and quality of information for consumers on this topic, and it is really important that it move forward."
While a list of mercury concentrations in individual fish is listed in tables on the FDA's website, health advocates want to see the information presented in a way that the public can easily understand. In her letter to the senators last year, Sebelius said the health department is working on that too.
The FDA and EPA, she said, are working to craft supplemental materials "that will provide additional, plain language insights to consumers about fish consumption during pregnancy." (Reporting By Toni Clarke; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)

Officials: 'Multiple fatalities' in Texas tornado

GRANBURY, Texas (AP) ? A spring tornado outbreak devastated parts of North Texas, causing multiple fatalities and destroying or damaging dozens of homes.

The worst-hit city Wednesday was Granbury, where authorities say a deadly tornado tore through two neighborhoods.

The same storm spawned another tornado that storm spotters told the National Weather Service was a mile wide. That twister tore through part of Cleburne, about 25 miles southeast of Granbury.

Cleburne Mayor Scott Cain said he had no reports of fatalities and had no estimate of the number of injuries. However, he said his inspection of the affected neighborhood in the southwestern part of his city revealed dozens of homes destroyed or severely damaged.

Moth-inspired nanostructures take the color out of thin films

May 16, 2013 ? Inspired by the structure of moth eyes, researchers at North Carolina State University have developed nanostructures that limit reflection at the interfaces where two thin films meet, suppressing the "thin-film interference" phenomenon commonly observed in nature. This can potentially improve the efficiency of thin-film solar cells and other optoelectronic devices.

Thin-film interference occurs when a thin film of one substance lies on top of a second substance. For example, thin-film interference is what causes the rainbow sheen we see when there is gasoline in a puddle of water.

Gasoline is transparent, but some light is still reflected off of its surface. Similarly, some of the light that passes through the gasoline is reflected off the underlying surface of the water where the two substances interface, or meet. Because the light reflected off the water has to pass back through the gasoline, it takes a slightly different optical path than the light that was reflected off the surface of the gasoline. The mismatch of these optical path "lengths" is what creates the rainbow sheen -- and that phenomenon is thin-film interference.

Thin-film interference is a problem for devices that use multiple layers of thin films, like thin-film solar cells, because it means that some wavelengths of light are being reflected -- or "lost" -- at every film interface. The more thin films a device has, the more interfaces there are, and the more light is lost.

"We were inspired by the surface structure of a moth's eye, which has evolved so that it doesn't reflect light," says Dr. Chih-Hao Chang, an assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper on the research. "By mimicking that concept, we've developed a nanostructure that significantly minimizes thin-film interference."

The nanostructures are built into thin films that will have a second thin film placed on top of them. The nanostructures are an extension of the thin film beneath them, and resemble a tightly-packed forest of thin cones. These nanostructures are "interfacial," penetrating into whatever thin film is layered on top of them -- and limiting the amount of light reflected at that interface. Chang's team found that the an interface featuring the interfacial nanostructures reflects 100 times less light than an interface of thin films without the nanostructures.

"Our next steps are to design a solar device that takes advantage of this concept and to determine how we can scale it up for commercial applications," Chang says.

Swiss to crack down on business, sports bribery

GENEVA (AP) ? The Swiss government wants to broaden its anti-corruption laws to make bribery a criminal offense in almost all cases.

The move follows criticism from anti-graft advocates who claim Switzerland doesn't do enough to prevent bribery by businesses and international sports organizations based in the Alpine country.

The Cabinet on Wednesday proposed changing the law to include bribes paid during the selection of hosts for major sporting events like the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics.

Until now, Swiss authorities have investigated bribery only if it involved government officials or it "distorted market competition." The new offense would automatically trigger a criminal investigation.

The government proposal would also make illegal bribes paid to sports clubs rather than directly to officials.

Exclusive: EU to warn China it may levy duties against Huawei - sources

By Ethan Bilby

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission plans to send a formal warning to China that it is ready to levy sanctions against telecoms equipment makers Huawei and ZTE Corp over illegal subsidies, people close to the matter said.

EU trade chief Karel De Gucht is set to win support from the bloc's executive on Wednesday to send the warning letter and show China's new president, Xi Jinping, that Brussels is serious about countering what it says is state support.

"We want to send a warning to the Chinese, a letter of intent that if they don't change their practices, there will be duties," said one person involved, adding that De Gucht had the full backing of European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

The decision will mark an intensification of the European Union's efforts to guard against what Brussels says is dumping by China, the EU's second-largest trading partner. From June, the Commission will also levy duties on billions of dollars of solar panels from China, EU officials have told Reuters.

Huawei was a little known telecoms firm less than a decade ago but today, along with its smaller rival ZTE, it holds almost a quarter of the European market.

That poses a security risk, the Commission says, because European industries ranging from healthcare to water utilities are becoming reliant on cheaper Chinese wireless technology.

An internal EU report last year recommended that the 27-member bloc should take action against Chinese telecoms equipment makers as their increasing dominance of mobile networks made them a threat to security as well as to home-grown companies.

COLLECTING EVIDENCE

A Huawei spokeswoman in Brussels declined to comment on the move, but the company denies receiving unfair subsidies. It says its advantages are due to low-cost manufacturing and that its products are secure. There was no comment ZTE on Tuesday, but it also denies allegations of illegal subsidies.

De Gucht told Reuters in February there were serious concerns about China's growing presence in mobile telecoms networks, noting that the United States and Australia had effectively shut Huawei out of their markets.

Last year, Germany excluded Huawei from supplying the infrastructure for a national academic research network.

But European manufacturers Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks fear retaliation in China if they push to launch an anti-subsidy case, so the Commission has been collecting evidence on Huawei and ZTE with a view to launching a case on its own initiative.

Division between EU countries over the telecoms issue meant De Gucht has trodden cautiously. Britain and the Netherlands have embraced Huawei as a major job provider, while France and Italy have been backing De Gucht on going ahead with sanctions.

Officials say they now have proof of Chinese subsidies.

"This is a political decision tomorrow," said another person briefed on the Commission's thinking. "It's basically saying, we have all the evidence we need, we don't need to launch an investigation," the person said.

The Huawei spokeswoman noted that the company had offered several times to meet the European Commission but was rebuffed.

"We are open to talking with stakeholders. Because there are allegations, there are misunderstandings and misperceptions, that's why we are always keen to discuss with all the stakeholders," Tina Tsai said.

Colorado farmer plants country's first legal hemp crop in decades ...

A farmer in southeastern Colorado has planted a crop that hasn?t been legally grown in the United States for 60 years ? industrial hemp.

Hemp is the much-maligned cousin of marijuana, a harmless plant that contains a negligible amount of the psychoactive THC that has made marijuana so controversial.

Under federal law, however, hemp is just as illegal as pot.

But hemp was freed from its legal bonds in Colorado when voters passed Amendment 64 in November, the measure that legalized adult recreational use of pot.

Farmer Ryan Loflin planted the first of what is expected to be several hemp crops grown throughout the state on Monday, in the farming town of Springfield. He?s growing 60 acres on land where he used to grow alfalfa, according to the Denver Post.

Hemp has scores of applications, including as cordage, in clothing, in plastics, in construction and in body care products. The annual market for hemp products is estimated to be about $500 million, according to the Hemp Industries Association, but all hemp is imported into the United States since it?s illegal under the Controlled Substances Act to grow it.

?As the hemp market grows and Canadian farmers increase their hemp acreage to meet demand, U.S. farmers? frustration at being shut out of the lucrative worldwide hemp market is catalyzing real movement throughout all levels of government to legalize industrial hemp,? said HIA director Eric Steenstra, in a statement.

Because of its semi-arid climate, Colorado is well suited to growing hemp and farmers? organizations have said interest in the crop is high, especially due to a years-long drought that has crippled many farming operations.

Eight states have passed laws defining hemp as distinct from marijuana and removing barriers to its production, but farmers still face a raid by Drug Enforcement Administration officials enforcing federal law.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers have introduced the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013 in Congress. It?s been assigned to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations.
