Trendwatch: Chinese students set up fake Taobao stores to circumvent bank fees

Screenshot of Taobao site. ? All rights reserved.

NEW YORK, Sept 30 ? A new kind of online store is appearing on Taobao, China?s largest e-commerce marketplace.

At cursory glance, these Taobao stores look like ordinary online shops. In reality, they are selling ?living expenses? and are managed by Chinese students who use the e-commerce website to receive allowances from their parents in a bid to avoid paying bank fees for fund transfers.

Alibaba-owned Taobao, an online shopping site similar to eBay, is China's largest e-commerce platform with estimated market share of up to 70 per cent, and has 500 million registered users.

According to Chinese media, these online stores number in the thousands on the e-commerce marketplace. These shops offer ?products? that are usually priced at between 500 and 1,000 yuan (RM243 to RM486). To facilitate a fund transfer through the e-commerce website, parents of the students need simply ?purchase? the product and pay into the seller?s Alipay account, an online payment platform in China that is the equivalent of China?s Paypal. The funds received in Alipay will then allow the store seller to spend it elsewhere on Taobao, or at other Chinese e-commerce sites. Anyone can set up a Taobao store, which is free of charge so long as the seller has an Alipay account.

By transferring funds through these fake Taobao stores, students can avoid bank transfer fees as Alipay users can transfer up to 10,000 yuan every month free of charge. By contrast, most banks in China charge a fee of 1 per cent of the funds transferred, reported the Chinese-language Xinhua08.com.

False trading is not allowed on Taobao and it is unknown how many such stores have been shut down to date. In the first six months of 2012, Taobao removed 45.2 million products for alleged copyright or brand violations, including 2.3 million in response to qualified complaints from rights holders, reported Reuters Thursday.

China has more than 29 million tertiary-level students, with 75 per cent of them spending 18 per cent of their time daily online, according to a study by media research firm GroupM Knowledge last year. Notably, 52 per cent of these university students enjoy shopping online, which is a rate much higher than the overall 20 per cent surveyed among Chinese netizens. ? AFP-Relaxnews

92% Neil Young Journeys

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (4)

"Journeys" is simply a trip most need not take.

I'd say the movie does a fine job of completing the trilogy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Demme and Young have more in them yet.

Like Young, Demme often takes an iconoclastic route. This is in part a concert film, yes, but not a traditional one.

Forget Crosby, Stills and Nash and maybe even Crazy Horse. Jonathan Demme might be Neil Young's ultimate collaborator.

As a songwriter, Young can still deliver: one of the best tunes here is a lovely, piano-propelled number, "Leia," that he hasn't even released yet.

The wartsy antipode of Katy Perry: Part of Me, with an intimacy and intensity bordering on the overwhelming.

...just Young and his insinuating voice (which I'm inclined to credit more now than I was 40 years ago), various guitars, harmonica and piano, over which he displays a great and tender command.

Fans of folk rock legend Neil Young who are willing to accept that the guy is well past his prime will respond to the downbeat tone of Jonathan Demme's concert film.

The director is putting Young in the audience's lap, allowing the viewer to examine all the creases and crevices of his grizzled face as well as capturing the emotion the singer pours into his songs.

These two world-renowned and individualistic artists from the worlds of music and film clearly bask in each other's company. We, the audience, would be fools to respond otherwise.

Long may he run, sure, but 'Neil Young Journeys' has the feeling of a farewell.

"Journeys" is about looking back - not in sorrow or wistfulness, but in affection and, often, impassioned remembrance of times past and how they still resonate in the present.

A mesmerizing and intimate visit with a performer who is identified most closely with rock 'n' roll, but whose artistic curiosity has taken him in myriad directions musically throughout his 40-plus-year career.

Neil Young Journeys does for some of us what a rare film can do - it revives and renews our spirit. Neil Young and Jonathan Demme. Heart and soul. Wisdom and age. Fire and ashes. Lightning and thunder.

For fans, Journeys is like that box set of uneven rarities that they simply must own. For casual friends, it's 90 minutes in good company. For the rest - ho-hum.

An unusually fulsome tribute to the singer-songwriter from the director of The Silence of the Lambs.

On its own terms, "Neil Young Journeys" is an enjoyable concert film of a solo show in Toronto, interspersed with memories of his Canadian boyhood.

The concert camera work is sometimes a little tight for comfort (not really interested in Young's bridge work), though it adds to the intensity.

Movie fans probably don't need to hear him sing "Ohio" again, but "Neil Young Journeys" -- Jonathan Demme's second Young doc, if you're counting -- does have some new wrinkles.

In a sense, this film finishes a cycle that began with the homey and impressive "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" and continued with the raucous "Neil Young Trunk Show" of 2009.

There?s something about dressing nicely that puts that extra pep in our step. Wearing a spiffy suit or fancy dress gives us an extra oomph, and up until now, we were unaware that our fellow four-legged friends think so, too.

Are we claiming dogs like to be dapper and cats enjoy being chic? You betcha! The ?Well Dressed Animals? Tumblr features all sorts of animals costumed up in human garb to look extra handsome and beautiful. But considering animals are naked 24/7, we?re pretty sure putting on any sort of clothes would be considered ?dressing nicely?.

We had no idea Corgis liked wearing monkey pajamas, pug puppies don preppy sweaters, and lady cats sport classy Hawaiian button-ups. But luckily for us, they do!

Check out our favorite spiffed-out animals below!

What to watch in Supreme Court's new term

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When last we saw the chief justice of the United States on the bench, John Roberts was joining with the Supreme Court's liberals in an unlikely lineup that upheld President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Progressives applauded Roberts' statesmanship. Conservatives uttered cries of betrayal.

Now, the Supreme Court is embarking on a new term beginning Monday that could be as consequential as the last one, with the prospect for major rulings about affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights.

Many people on both the left and right expect Roberts to return to the fold and side with the conservative justices in the new term's big cases. If they're right, the spotlight will be back on Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose vote typically is decisive in cases that otherwise split the court's liberals and conservatives.

But Roberts will be watched closely, following his health care vote, for fresh signs that he's becoming less ideologically predictable.

It may be that the dramatic health care decision presages "some shift in his tenure as chief justice," said Steve Shapiro, the American Civil Liberties Union's national legal director. "Or does it give him cover to continue to pursue a conservative agenda?"

The first piece of evidence could be in the court's consideration of the University of Texas' already limited use of race to help fill its incoming freshman classes, which comes before the court Oct. 10. The outcome could further limit or even end the use of racial preferences in college admissions.

Roberts has expressed contempt for the use of race in drawing legislative districts, calling it "a sordid business, this divvying us up by race," and in assigning students to public schools, saying that "the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."

The written arguments submitted by both sides in the Texas case leave little doubt that Kennedy, not Roberts, holds the prized vote. The challengers of the Texas program and the university itself cite Kennedy's prior writings on affirmative action a combined 50 times.

The court also is expected to confront gay marriage in some form. Several cases seek to guarantee federal benefits for legally married same-sex couples. A provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act deprives same-sex couples of a range of federal benefits available to heterosexual couples.

Several federal courts have agreed that the provision of the law is unconstitutional, a situation that practically ensures that the high court will step in.

A separate appeal asks the justices to sustain California's Proposition 8, the amendment to the state constitution that outlawed gay marriage in the nation's largest state. Federal courts in California have struck down the amendment.

Once again, many legal analysts expect Roberts essentially to be against gay marriage. "The outcome clearly turns on how Anthony Kennedy votes," said Georgetown University law professor Michael Seidman.

The justices may not even consider whether to hear the gay marriage issue until November.

Another hot topic with appeals pending before the high court, and more soon to follow, is the future of a cornerstone law of the civil rights movement.

In 2006, Congress overwhelmingly approved, and President George W. Bush signed, legislation extending for 25 more years a critical piece of the Voting Rights Act. It requires states and local governments with a history of racial and ethnic discrimination, mainly in the South, to get advance approval either from the Justice Department or the federal court in Washington before making any changes that affect elections.

The requirement currently applies to the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. It also covers certain counties in California, Florida, New York, North Carolina and South Dakota, and some local jurisdictions in Michigan and New Hampshire. Coverage has been triggered by past discrimination not only against blacks, but also against American Indians, Asian-Americans, Alaskan Natives and Hispanics.

The court spoke skeptically about the provision in a 2009 decision, but left it mostly unchanged. Now, however, cases from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas could prompt the court to deal head on with the issue of advance approval. The South Carolina and Texas cases involve voter identification laws; a similar Indiana law was previously upheld by the court.

It is unclear when the justices will decide whether to hear arguments in those cases. Arguments themselves would not take place until next year.

Yet there still is a chance that the court could become enmeshed in election disputes, even before the ballots are counted. Suits in Ohio over early voting and provisional ballots appear the most likely to find their way to the justices before the Nov. 6 election, said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine law school.

Among other important cases already on the court's docket:

? A high-stakes dispute, to be argued first thing Monday, between the business community and human rights advocates over the reach of a 1789 law. The issue is whether businesses can be sued in U.S. courts for human rights violations that take place on foreign soil and have foreign victims.

? A challenge to the use of drug-sniffing dogs in two situations. Florida police used a marijuana-sniffing dog's alert at the door of a private home to obtain a search warrant to look inside the house. The question is whether the dog's sniff itself was a search. A separate case looks at the reliability of animals trained to pick up the scent of illegal drugs.

? A challenge to the detention of a man who police picked up a mile away from an apartment they had a warrant to search. Occupants of a home may be detained during the search for the safety of officers, but this case tests how far that authority extends away from the place to be searched.

? Environmental disputes involving runoff from logging roads in Oregon and water pollution in Los Angeles.

Paul Clement, the Republican lawyer who lost the health care case and could be before the justices on gay marriage and voting rights, said last term punctured the notion that in close cases, the court goes where Kennedy wants.

"We've all been reminded that's not always the case," he said.

The idea that could be tested this term is whether Roberts' concern for the court as an institution that is apart from politics will influence his votes, or at least his reasoning, in the year's biggest cases.

Immunologists find a molecule that puts the brakes on inflammation

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? We couldn't live without our immune systems, always tuned to detect and eradicate invading pathogens and particles. But sometimes the immune response goes overboard, triggering autoimmune diseases like lupus, asthma or inflammatory bowel disease.

A new study led by University of Pennsylvania researchers has now identified a crucial signaling molecule involved in counterbalancing the immune system attack.

"The immune response is like driving a car," said Christopher Hunter, professor and chair in the Department of Pathobiology in Penn's School of Veterinary Medicine. "You hit the accelerator and develop this response that's required to protect you from a pathogen, but, unless you have a brake to guide the response, then you'll just careen off the road and die because you can't control the speed of the response."

The research to characterize this immune system "brake" was led by Hunter and Aisling O'Hara Hall, a doctoral candidate in the Immunology Graduate Group. Additional Penn collaborators included scientists from the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute's Department of Biology and the Perelman School of Medicine's Department of Medicine. Researchers from Merck Research Laboratories, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, Harvard Medical School and Janssen Research and Development also contributed to the work, which was published in the journal Immunity.

"Healthy people have these cells -- you have them, I have them -- that are called Tregs," or regulatory T cells, Hunter said. "If you don't have them you develop spontaneous inflammation and disease."

Different forms of regulatory T cells operate as the brakes on various kinds of inflammation, but, until now, scientists hadn't been certain of how these Tregs became specialized to do their particular jobs.

Hall, Hunter and colleagues decided to follow up on a molecule called IL-27. Scientists used to think IL-27 played a role in causing inflammation, but, in 2005, a team of Penn researchers, including Hunter, found the opposite; it was actually involved in suppressing inflammation. Thus, when mice that lack IL-27 are challenged with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, they develop overwhelming inflammation.

"We never worked out how it did that, but it was a paradigm change at the time," Hunter said.

In the new study, the researchers delved deeper into IL-27's role. They found that exposing regulatory T cells to IL-27 promoted their ability to suppress a particular type of inflammation. The Penn-led team also demonstrated that they could rescue infected IL-27-deficient mice by giving them a transfusion of regulatory T cells. This finding suggests that IL-27 is required to produce the Treg cells that normally keep inflammatory responses in check during infection.

"Very surprisingly, we were able to show that the Tregs could ameliorate the pathology in this system," Hall said. "We don't think this is the only mechanism by which IL-27 limits immune pathology, but it sheds light on one mechanism by which it could be functioning."

Further experiments showed that Tregs express a different suite of genes in the presence of IL-27 as compared to another molecule that has been implicated in this process, interferon gamma, or IFN-?. The researchers' findings indicate that the two molecules have division of labor when it comes to suppressing inflammation: IL-27 seems to be important in helping control inflammation at the site of inflammation, whereas IFN-? appears more significant in the peripheral tissues.

"At the site of inflammation, where you're getting your pathology, that's where IL- 27 is important," Hall said.

With a new understanding of how IL-27 may cause a class of Tregs to become specialized inflammation fighters, researchers have a new target for ameliorating the unwanted inflammation associated with all kinds of autoimmune conditions.

"Now we have a molecular signature that may be relevant in inflammatory bowel disease, in multiple sclerosis, in colitis and Crohn's disease, in rheumatoid arthritis, in lupus," Hunter said.

Next on tap, the team plans to study IL-27 in the context of asthma, lupus and arthritis.

In addition to Hall and Hunter, the authors included Beena John, Claudia Gonz?lez Lombana, Gretchen Harms Pritchard, Jonathan S. Silver, Jason S. Stumhofer, Tajie H. Harris, Elia D. Tait Wojno, Sagie Wagage and Philip Scott of Penn Vet's Department of Pathobiology; Daniel P. Beiting, David S. Roos and Sara Cheery of the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute Department of Biology; Steven Reiner, formerly of the Penn Department of Medicine; Cristina M. Tato and Daniel Cua of Merck Research Laboratories; Yasmine Belkaid, Guillaume Oldenhove, Nicolas Bouladoux and John Grainger of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease; Laurence A. Turka of Harvard Medical School; and M. Merle Elloso of Janssen Research and Development.

The study was supported by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Institutes of Health.

Justice Altmas Kabir is new Chief Justice of India

Justice Altmas Kabir, the seniormost judge of the Supreme Court, was on Saturday sworn in as the 39th Chief Justice of India.

He was administered the oath of the office by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Justice Kabir has succeeds SH Kapadia, who demitted office on Saturday. He will be the Chief Justice of India for nine months, till July 19, 2013.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, senior BJP leader LK Advani, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav were also present at the swearing in, as were scores of cabinet ministers, including Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma and Farooq Abdullah.

All the sitting and some former judges of the apex court, Attorney General GE Vahanvati and other law officers of the government too were present.

Born on July 19, 1948, Chief Justice Kabir is only the second Chief Justice, along with his predecessor, to be born in post-independence India.

Chief Justice Kabir is the fourth Muslim to occupy the top position after Chief Justice M Hidayatullah, Chief Justice M Hameedullah and Chief Justice AM Ahmedi.

After doing his MA and LLB, Chief Justice Kabir enrolled as an advocate in 1973 and practised in the district court and the Calcutta High Court.

Chief Justice Kabir was appointed permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on August 06, 1990. Thereafter on March 01, 2005, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.

He was elevated as a judge of the apex court September 09, 2005.

It goes to the credit of Chief Justice Kabir that irrespective of the stature of the counsel appearing for the litigant - senior or greenhorn - he would get an equal measure of the court's attention.

Chief Justice Kabir is also instrumental in the design of the additional complex of the apex court that would be coming up at Pragati Maidan, in the site that once housed the famous Appu Ghar.

The building has certain features which make it an amalgamation of all religions traditions within the country.

Chief Justice Kabir said, on the sidelines of the function organised to bid adieu to his predecessor, Chief Justice Kapadia: "I wanted to show that the Supreme Court is a place where all religions have equal respect."

One of the most important cases that Chief Justice Kabir is hearing is the appeal by the Italian government asserting sovereign immunity to its two marines, accused of shooting down two Indian fishermen, mistaking them for pirates.

That incident occurred off the Kochi coast in February this year.

Calif. man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The mystery surrounding the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East took a strange turn after he appeared in court and gave yet another name in a string of aliases.

Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

The full story about Nakoula and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Benghazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Nakoula this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Nakoula's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said. Nakoula told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

The public got their first good look at Nakoula on Thursday, although the news media was banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse.

Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Nakoula's attorney, Steven Seiden, sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Nakoula is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Nakoula couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

Wilson has tough task of replacing Revis for Jets

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:21 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Darrelle Revis is likely gone for the season with a knee injury, and Kyle Wilson has the tough task of replacing the All-Pro cornerback for the New York Jets.

The rest of Rex Ryan's defense will need to step up in a big way, too, starting Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine says no one can "just step in and replace a Darrelle Revis," but the Jets are counting on Wilson - their first-round pick in 2010 - to do a good job in his place. Pettine says the Jets won't make any major changes on defense without Revis, rather the differences will be "more subtle."

Wilson has tried to take the promotion in stride, downplaying the pressure of replacing arguably the NFL's best defensive player.

Ready for your close-up? Distance at which facial photos are taken influences perception, study shows

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." For people in certain professions -- acting, modeling, and even politics -- this phrase rings particularly true. Previous studies have examined how our social judgments of pictures of people are influenced by factors such as whether the person is smiling or frowning, but until now one factor has never been investigated: the distance between the photographer and the subject. According to a new study by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), this turns out to make a difference -- close-up photo subjects, the study found, are judged to look less trustworthy, less competent, and less attractive.

The new finding is described in this week's issue of the open-access journal PLoS ONE.

Pietro Perona, the Allen E. Puckett Professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech, came up with the initial idea for the study. Perona, an art history enthusiast, suspected that Renaissance portrait paintings often featured subtle geometric warping of faces to make the viewer feel closer or more distant to a subject. Perona wondered if the same sort of warping might affect photographic portraits -- with a similar effect on their viewers -- so he collaborated with Ralph Adolphs, Bren Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and professor of biology, and CNS graduate student Ronnie Bryan (PhD '12) to gather opinions on 36 photographs representing two different images of 18 individuals. One of each pair of images was taken at close range and the second at a distance of about seven feet.

"It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance," explains Bryan. "Of course, the close picture would also normally be larger, higher resolution and have different lighting -- but we controlled for all of that in our study. What you're left with is a warping effect that is so subtle that nobody in our study actually noticed it. Nonetheless, it's a perceptual clue that influenced their judgments."

That subtle distance warping, however, had a big effect: close-up photos made people look less trustworthy, according to study participants. The close-up photo subjects were also judged to look less attractive and competent.

"This was a surprising, and surprisingly reliable, effect," says Adolphs. "We went through a bunch of experiments, some testing people in the lab, and some even over the Internet; we asked participants to rate trustworthiness of faces, and in some experiments we asked them to invest real money in unfamiliar people whose faces they saw as a direct measure of how much they trusted them."

Across all of the studies, the researchers saw the same effect, Adolphs says: in photos taken from a distance of around two feet, a person looked untrustworthy, compared to photos taken seven feet away. These two distances were chosen by the researchers because one is within, and the other outside of, personal space -- which on average is about three to four feet from the body.

In some of the studies, the researchers digitally warped images of faces taken at a distance to artificially manipulate how trustworthy they would appear. "Once you know the relation between the distance warp and the trustworthiness judgment, you could manipulate photos of faces and change the perceived trustworthiness,'' notes Perona.

He says that the group is now planning to build on these findings, using machine-vision techniques -- technologies that can automatically analyze data in images. For example, one application would be for a computer program to have the ability to evaluate any face image in a magazine or on the Internet and to estimate the distance at which the photo was taken.

"The work might also allow us to estimate the perceived trustworthiness of a particular face image," says Perona. "You could imagine that many people would be interested in such applications -- particularly in the political arena."

The study, "Perspective Distortion from Interpersonal Distance Is an Implicit Visual Cue for Social Judgments of Faces," was funded by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Websites 101 - Increase Online Brand Presence |

To reap the very lucrative rewards of an established online brand presence you need to be active on the internet and have a website to market your business.

You have the perfect product; you offer the most superlative service to your clients. If you?re not on the World Wide Web though, you have very little chance of reaching the people who will buy your product and pay you for your services. Having a website that is properly managed and hosted, will put your business in the fast lane of the information super highway.

The internet is one of the best platforms to market a new or even an existing business, and creating a website that really works is not beyond the means of any business. Getting it onto the internet and keeping it there is called web hosting and choosing the right web hosting company can make a difference to your online brand presence.

There are many different types of web hosting services available to suit the budget and the requirements of any business. From small start ups to large conglomerates, the choice of who will host your business website is a decision that needs to have some thought behind it.

The Five Most Common Types of Web Hosting:

  • There are free web hosting services, but they are usually filled with advertisements and may make your website look a little like spam. Free hosting is usually only recommended for personal or family websites.
  • A shared Web Hosting Service is one of the most common types of web hosting companies. Your business website will be placed on a shared server with other websites. Ranging in size from hundreds to thousands of sites all hosted by the same server, this type of hosting comes with most of the features and applications that are needed by a business.
  • A dedicated web hosting service means that the business gets their own slice of a server, without having to pay the overall cost of having a private server. It does mean that the business is responsible for security and maintenance of the server slice.
  • A Virtual Private Server. This is a different type of service that allows a website to have access to a portion of a private server but without any of the associated costs involved in maintaining a large server on the internet.
  • ?Cloud Hosting. Cloud computing is the latest technological buzzword and cloud hosting involves placing a website onto a virtual server. It is very stable, and it is economically viable because the business will only pay for the space that is used, not the potential usage.

Choosing a reliable web hosting service is an important business decision, and if made wisely it can result in an increased online brand presence, great internet business and increased revenue. Always choose a web hosting service that has a reliable and constant service, the last thing you want is for people to be looking for your website and your perfect product and not be able to find it, because the server is ?down for maintenance?. Find a web hosting service that is online for 99% of the time, gives you daily backups and offers security from malicious software and firewalls to protect against spam.

Report: Ohio nurse didn't realize she took kidney

(AP) ? A nurse who accidentally disposed of a living donor's kidney during a transplant said she didn't realize it was in chilled, protective slush that she removed from an operating room, took down a hall to a dirty utility room and "flushed down a hopper," according to a report released by health officials on Monday.

The nurse said she had been on a break when a surgeon told everyone the kidney had been put in the sterile, semi-frozen solution. That detail was in a review by the state for the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and obtained by The Associated Press through a records request. The transplant was Aug. 10 at the University of Toledo Medical Center.

Hospital administrative staff members interviewed on Aug. 21 hadn't determined how the nurse took the 13-gallon bag of slush, meant to extend the kidney's viability, past several members of the medical staff without them noticing a problem, the report said.

It said poor oversight and communication and insufficient policies were factors in the kidney's disposal, which prompted the voluntary, temporary suspension of the hospital's living-donor kidney transplant program and led to reviews by health officials and a consulting surgeon hired by the hospital.

The hospital, in northwest Ohio about 135 miles north of Columbus, "failed to provide adequate supervision and communication resulting in a donor's kidney being carried out of the operating room, down a hall, into a dirty utility room, and flushed down a hopper," the report stated.

The hospital has since enacted clearer policies to clarify communication between nurses who fill in for one another and to make sure nothing is removed from an operating room until the patient has been moved from it, the report said.

The surveyors determined the hospital wasn't in compliance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, conditions of participation for transplant and surgical services. CMS will authorize a full review of the conditions of participation for the hospital, and, if it's found out of compliance, it could be terminated from the Medicare program, CMS spokeswoman Elizabeth Surgener said in an email.

The hospital, which says it offers specialty care in areas including cardiology, cancer, surgery and kidney transplantation, also may submit a plan of correction.

A spokesman said he had no comment to provide from the hospital Monday.

The hospital hasn't said what happened to the intended kidney recipient, who was supposed to receive an organ donated by her brother. The intended recipient and her brother were released from the hospital, which didn't identify them and said it couldn't say whether she received a different kidney.

Hospital officials apologized and hired a Texas surgeon to evaluate their transplant procedures but have not released the results of that evaluation.

The medical center suspended two nurses after the incident; one was later fired, and the other resigned, the hospital said. A surgeon was stripped of his title as director of some surgical services, and a surgical services administrator put on paid leave has resumed work.

The hospital also notified 975 patients and potential organ donors and recipients that they might need to make other arrangements for services typically provided through the program under review.

Crocs on a Plane! - Carry On | Travel + Leisure

    crocodile

Somebody in Australia may be getting the last laugh over airlines' lofty checked baggage fees.

After a recent Qantas Airways flight from Brisbane to Melbourne, cargo handlers got a wacky surprise while unloading the plane: a live crocodile had gotten loose amongst the baggage.

Sounds like a fabulous Samsonite commercial, doesn?t it? Croc jumps on bags, rifles through passengers? belongings, snacks on undeclared vegemite stashed in luggage.

While the croc was ?was quickly and safely secured,? according to the airline, no one is sure yet whether the loose croc was the fault of the cargo loaders, its human patron?or was just a testament to the toothy reptile's craftiness.

For the record, Qantas? site says that reptiles, lizards and snakes are allowed to travel in cargo, though "the locking mechanism on the door of the container and any hinges must be secure and strong enough to prevent any possibility of escape." Oops.

Antiguan and Barbudan song writers | Wadadli Pen

The cover of the Calypso Association 50th anniversary magazine on which I had the privilege of working as editor.

As with the playwrights and screenwriters, the listing of Calypso song writers may will take a good long while, building sloooowly over time as I gather information and as I find time to upload the information I already have. Part of the challenge is that while we know the names of the artistes, the writers often exist somewhere in the wings, out of the spotlight (sometimes deliberately so). Often, even today, there are no liner notes (a pet peeve of mine since well-written liner notes enhance the listening experience for me). So, more than any of my lists, this one promises to be a challenge. If you know who wrote?the classic tracks (the year and who sung them)?going all the way back, don?t hesitate to whisper in my ?ear?. I think Antigua and Barbuda has produced some classic calypsos and they dripped from somebody?s pen; and those guys and gals deserve a bit of the spotlight, wouldn?t you say?

Muerah ?Mighty Artist? Bodie?s calypsos are known for their double entendre (read: alternate lewd interpretation), earning the most humorous prize in competition a time or two. His songs include ?Vitamins and Iron?, ?Tarpan Tone Up?, ?Woman Working Under Man?, ?Me Ole Wife?, ?Pot Hole?, ?Business Dead?, ?Clap You Tongue?, and others. He?s been singing since 1972.

Marcus Christopher- over 300 calypsos written: incuding Short Shirt?s Carnival on the Moon, Beatles MBE, No Place Like Home, Parasite, Technical School, Black Like Me, and The World Needs Love; Zemakai?s Tribute to Radio Antigua and Fidel Castro; King Canary?s Gem of the Caribbean and Slapping Hands; and Sleepy?s Under the Carpet.

Toriano ?Onyan? Edwards ? One fourth of the original groundbreaking Antiguan jam/soca band Burning Flames and later a solo act and four time calypso monarch (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000); Onyan has attracted controversy for lyrics deemed offensive by some (I for instance wrote an article critical of 2012?s Kick een she back doh and there were calls by women?s groups to ban the song) and not for the first time; anyone remember such classics as Man fu Whorehouse and Baby Food off the Baby Food album? But with songs like Crazy Man, Old Fire Stick, Life in the Ghetto, Nice and Slow?and even the named controversial songs he remains (at this writing) a crowd favourite and road march winner.

    Mclean ?Short Shirt? Emmanuel -?15 time Calypso Monarch (?64, ?65, ?66, ?69, ?70, ?72, ?74, ?75, ?76, ?79, ?80, ?86, ?87, ?88, ?92).?Check out this article on his 1976 album, Feeling the Ghetto Vibes.

    K. Erasto

    Kayode Erasto ? TBD

Joseph ?Calypso Joe? Hunte ? His classic ?Bum Bum? became, in 1970,?the first homegrown winner of the Antigua and Barbuda calypso road march title. Other well known tracks composed and (I believe) written by Joe include: 1971?s??Educate the Youths? and ?Recorded in History? with which he won the Calypso Monarch crown;?? ?War?, ?A Nation to Build, A Country to Mould?, and 1972?s ?Life of a Negro Boy?.

Oglivier??Destroyer? Jacobs? has written for both himself and his son Leston ?Young Destroyer? Jacobs. Destroyer Sr. has never won the crown, though he came close in 1971 and 1989 winning the first runner-up spot. His written songs include 1967?s ?Bring Back the Cat-o-Nine?, 1989?s ?Discrimination? and ?Message from Gorkie?, ?Back of de Bus? (sung by his son and winner of best social commentary in 2006),

Accepting a National Vibes Star Project Award

?Woodpecker Sarah?, ?Jail Cart?, ?Country Running Good?, ?All Fool?s Day?, ?Beg Georgie Pardon?, ?Ah Wha Me Do You?, ?Can?t Smile ?Bout That?, ?Ah Wonder Who Do Dis?, and many others.

    King Zacari

Trevor ?King Zacari? King? (pictured above, performing)- The 1991 and 2001 monarch began writing for juniors in the early 1990s (e.g. The Zulu Will Rise Again performed by Pepperseed) before entering the arena with his?own tracks among which can be counted?Black Rights, Guilty of Being Black, Fine Ants (2001), Guilty as Charged?etc. (others TBD)

    Rupert ?Swallow? Philo - TBD

Kobla ?Promise No Promises? Mentor?- This Guyana born?singer-songwriter broke through in Antigua with his?behind the scenes contributions (as co-writer)?on?the 2003 Wanski hit (More Gyal) before claiming the so/calypso spotlight the following year with hits like Can?t Stop My Carnival and Pon de Move; 2010?s Do Good ?and 2011?s Her Drums are?two of his more?recent offerings, the range demonstrative of an artiste not easily pigeon-holed.

Sir Prince Ramsey?is a?family physician by profession, an HIV/AIDS activist by choosing, a calypso?lyricist and producer?by calling. He has produced more than 45 calypso albums and written over 100 songs?since 1979 for artistes like?King Obstinate, Rupert??Baba? Blaize (?In Antigua?), Onyan (?Stand up for Antigua??- 1998 Calypso Monarch winner), De Bear (?My Allegiance? ? 2003 Calypso crown winner; and ?Man is Nothing but Dust? ? 2007 Leeward Islands calypso competition winner), Zero (?Protect Yourself? ? 2002 Calypso Monarch winner), De Empress (?We don?t want it here? and ?Power of a Woman? ? 2000 Queen of Calypso crown winner), Blade (?The Brink? ? 2008?Carnival Development Committee?winner for best writer and best calypso), and others (about 50 artistes in all).
