Enloop Will Write Your Business Plan For You

The Launchpad is a series that introduces Mashable readers to compelling startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.

Name: Enloop

One-Liner Pitch: Enloop helps entrepreneurs figure out whether their idea would really make for a good business.

Why It's Taking Off: The online service makes it easier for small and medium-sized companies to write business plans and vet their ideas.

Coming up with a good idea is just the first test for aspiring entrepreneurs; the next big test is figuring out whether that idea is actually a viable business. That's where Enloop comes in.

Enloop, an online service that launched in 2011, helps small and medium-sized companies craft and vet their business plans. The website prompts users to enter in basic information about their business ranging from product details to payroll information, and uses a set of common underwriting metrics to vet and predict the financial the performance of the company.

The goal, according to founder and CEO Cynthia McCahon, is to improve the success rate for small and medium-sized businesses. "So many entrepreneurs just assume success. They can't imagine their idea is anything other than good," McCahon told Mashable. "Enloop lets you set that aside and look at the data, the facts, so you can make a more informed decision to decide whether to go forward."

McCahon, a former business consultant, worked with several underwriters and financial institutions to pick out a set of key metrics for predicting a business's potential for financial success, which the average entrepreneur might not think about. All in all, Enloop uses 16 different financial metrics -- including ratios for expense-to-sales and debt-to-work as well as percent profit before taxes -- to evaluate business plans and give companies an overall performance score for their strategy.

Business owners can then compare this score to the average performance of businesses in their industry to see how their financials stack up. "You should be in the ballpark or at least have a reason for not being," McCahon said.

The service doesn't just vet one's business plan, however, it also helps business owners write it. Enloop recently added an auto-write feature that generates text for each section of a business plan based on the data the user has offered. As McCahon notes, it won't exactly be creative writing, but the tool will fill in your business plan with the kind of language that financial underwriters expect to see.

In addition to the auto-write feature, Enloop also recently added a text-sync option lets business owners insert live data from their financial reports into the text of the business plan so that the overall forecast stays up to date over time.

Enloop is bootstrapped at the moment, but its own business plan is to rely on a freemium model. Enloop lets each user create one business plan for free with a financial forecast that extends out three years, along with the predictive score and some additional analysis. Those business owners looking for more than that can sign up for one of three premium plans ranging from $9.95 to $39.95 a month, which provide more detailed financial forecasts.

Fiscal Cliff: Obama Gives Senate Leaders Mission Impossible

By Richard Cowan
WASHINGTON, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Following a Friday meeting with congressional leaders, an impatient and annoyed President Barack Obama said it was "mind boggling" that Congress has been unable to fix a "fiscal cliff" mess that everyone has known about for more than a year.
He then dispatched Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, on a mind-boggling mission: coming up with a bipartisan bill to break the "fiscal cliff" stalemate in the most partisan and gridlocked U.S. Congress of modern times - in about 48 hours.
Reid and McConnell, veteran tacticians known for their own long-running feud, have been down this road before.
Their last joint venture didn't turn out so well. It was the deal in August 2011 to avoid a U.S. default that set the stage for the current mess. That effort, like this one, stemmed from a grand deficit-reduction scheme that turned into a bust.
But they have never had the odds so stacked against them as they try to avert the "fiscal cliff" - sweeping tax increases set to begin on Tuesday and deep, automatic government spending cuts set to start on Wednesday, combined worth $600 billion.
The substantive differences are only part of the challenge. Other obstacles include concerns about who gets blamed for what and the legacy of distrust among members of Congress.
Any successful deal will require face-saving measures for Republicans and Democrats alike.
"Ordinary folks, they do their jobs, they meet deadlines, they sit down and they discuss things, and then things happen," Obama told reporters. "If there are disagreements, they sort though the disagreements. The notion that our elected leadership can't do the same thing is mind-boggling to them."

CORE DISAGREEMENT
The core disagreement between Republicans and Democrats is tough enough. It revolves around the low tax rates first put in place under Republican former President George W. Bush that expire at year's end. Republicans would extend them for everyone. Democrats would extend them for everyone except the wealthiest taxpayers.
The first step for Reid and McConnell may be to find a formula acceptable to their own parties in the Senate.
While members of the Senate, more than members of the House of Representatives, have expressed flexibility on taxes, it's far from a sure thing in a body that ordinarily requires not just a majority of the 100-member Senate to pass a bill, but a super-majority of 60 members.
With 51 Democrats, two independents who vote with the Democrats and 47 Republicans, McConnell and Reid may have to agree to suspend the 60-vote rule.
Getting a bill through the Republican-controlled House may be much tougher. The conservative wing of the House, composed of many lawmakers aligned with the Tea Party movement who fear being targeted by anti-tax activists in primary elections in 2014, has shown it will not vote for a bill that raises taxes on anyone, even if it means defying Republican House Speaker John Boehner.
Many Democrats are wedded to the opposite view - and have vowed not to support continuing the Bush-era tax rates for people earning more than $250,000 a year.
Some senators are wary of the procedural conditions House Republicans are demanding. Boehner is insisting the Senate start its work with a bill already passed by the House months ago that would continue all Bush-era tax cuts for another year. The Democratic-controlled Senate may amend the Republican bill, he says, but it must be the House bill.
For Boehner, it's the regular order when considering revenue measures, which the U.S. Constitution says must originate in the House.

SHIFT BLAME
As some Democrats see it, it's a way to shift blame if the enterprise goes down in flames. House Republicans would be able to claim that since they had already done their part by passing a bill, the Senate should take the blame for plunging the nation off the "cliff."
And that could bring public wrath, currently centered mostly on Republicans, onto the heads of Democrats.
Voters may indeed be looking for someone to blame if they see their paychecks shrink as taxes rise or their retirement savings dwindle as a result of a plunge in global markets.
If Reid and McConnell succeed, there could be political ramifications for each side. For example, a deal containing any income tax hikes could complicate McConnell's own 2014 re-election effort in which small-government, anti-tax Tea Party activists are threatening to mount a challenge.
If Obama and his fellow Democrats are perceived as giving in too much, it could embolden Republicans to mount challenge after challenge, possibly handcuffing the president before his second term even gets off the ground.
It could be a sprint to the finish. One Democratic aide expected "negotiation for a day." If the aide is correct, the world would know by late on Saturday or early on Sunday if Washington's political dysfunction is about to reach a new, possibly devastating, low.
If Reid and McConnell reach a deal, it would then be up to the full Senate and House to vote, possibly as early as Sunday.
Reid and McConnell have been through bitter fights before. The deficit reduction and debt limit deal that finally was secured last year was a brawl that ended only when the two leaders agreed to a complicated plan that secured about $1 trillion in savings, but really postponed until later a more meaningful plan to restore the country's fiscal health.
That effort led to the automatic spending cuts that form part of the "fiscal cliff."
Just months later, in December 2011, Reid and McConnell were going through a tough fight over extending a payroll tax cut.
In both instances, it was resistance from conservative House Republicans that complicated efforts, just as is the case now with the "fiscal cliff." (Editing by Fred Barbash and Will Dunham)

Denon Cocoon Portable

Lately, we've seen a slew of wireless speakers hit the market, be they Bluetooth options or systems that use Apple's AirPlay. Several, like the Denon Cocoon Portable, attempt to sweeten the deal of wireless music even more by adding rechargeable portability as a feature, as well as Android and Windows streaming compatibility. At $499.99 (direct), however, you'd expect the Cocoon Portable to offer powerful, distortion-free audio, and unfortunately, that isn't always the case. Deep bass tracks cause substantial distortion at top volumes, making the system's otherwise solid feature set a bit less compelling.

Design
As far as AirPlay docks go, the 7.1-by-13.8-by-5.4-inch (HWD), 7.3-pound Denon Cocoon Portable doesn't break any new territory, at least visually. The main color scheme is the seemingly Apple-ordained black with metallic accents that nearly every other AirPlay option uses. But the portable speaker is easy to carry around with its built-in handle, and its contour is water and sand resistant, to boot.

Unlike the majority of AirPlay speakers, the Cocoon Portable also has an actual built-in charging dock. The docking tray pops out when you press it and houses an LED status display, which scrolls artist and song title info when streaming from an iOS device or when one is docked.

Across the top panel, a series of touch sensitive buttons controls Playback, Volume, and whatever your sound source is?it switches between radio presets and whatever device you're streaming from or have docked.

The metallic mesh speaker grille covers the rounded front panel and hides two 25-watt, 4-inch drivers. Along the back panel, there's a power adapter connection for the included power supply, a 3.5mm Aux input, an Ethernet port, buttons labeled Netlink and WPS (both used during set-up), a Loudness button (more on that later), and the Power switch.?

The manual is included on a CD, which is useless for several devices this speaker is designed to work with, including some recent computers, so I don't really understand the logic there. Also included is a small, membrane-buttoned remote control with Power, Volume, Play/Pause, Track Navigation, and Sound Source, but it lacks full menu navigation. This would be more of an annoyance if you couldn't just use your device's on-screen controls to navigate menus?since you'll likely be streaming, your device is basically its own remote control. There's a nook on the back panel for storing the remote.Denon Cocoon Portable rear panel

Setting up the Cocoon Portable to stream wireless audio from an iOS device is simple?dock it, download the Denon app when you're prompted to, and follow the simple instructions. You'll need a Wi-Fi network and its password, but that's about all you need to have handy. The Netlink button on the back exists for routers that don't support WPS?press it and follow the instructions on the app. The app also doubles as an alarm clock, which is useful if you keep the Cocoon near your bed and want to wake up listening to music.

The system supports streaming via Apple's AirPlay, but it also supports Android devices, and streaming from most Windows computers. Denon estimates the rechargeable battery has a roughly 5 hour life on a full charge.?

Performance
In terms of controlling it, the Cocoon can be a bit of a troublemaker. My docked iPhone 4S, with no AirPlay or Wi-Fi involved, would often respond to on-display volume adjustments to the phone with a multiple-second delay. So you think you're turning it up, but after a few seconds and no result, you boost things a little more, and then a few seconds later, your actions catch up with you and you end up blasting the speakers or cutting their volume more drastically than intended.?Using AirPlay causes similar delays.

The loudness button is a relic of older times?it adds a bass boost boost and some digital signal processing when you listen at lower volumes, and does something similar at higher volumes, too. It's a fairly harmless, but unnecessary, feature, as the Cocoon Portable sounds crisper and clearer with the Loudness button not engaged.

As for audio performance, the Cocoon Portable sounds just fine at moderate-to-loud volumes. But when you really pump the volume, expect distortion to rear its ugly head on tracks with deep bass, regardless of whether the Loudness button is engaged. At maximum volume, the Knife's "Silent Shout" becomes a crackling, fuzzy, distorting mess, and even at about 85 percent, things are dicey. This isn't shocking when you look at the Cocoon Portable itself?it's not tiny, but it is lightweight and designed to be portable. It doesn't have the look or feel of an extremely powerful speaker system.

You'll never mistake the Cocoon Portable for a system with a built-in subwoofer, but its bass performance is not anemic, either.?The real strength of its audio performance is the delivery of low-mid and high-mid frequencies; bass guitars, vocals, and middle-register instruments have the majority of the spotlight here.?Rock and pop is delivered with crisp highs and enough low-end presence to round things out nicely.

On classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the highs and mids are delivered with a nice treble edge to them. The higher register strings and percussion are never overly bright, but are definitely the stars of the mix. Lower register strings are delivered with a tiny bit of bass boost, but nothing that makes them sound muddy or over-the-top. if anything, it's the highs that sound a tad over-boosted, but it helps keep things articulate. The Loudness button adds a bit of spacial sense and depth to the sound, as well as some brightness, but nothing extra is really needed to begin with, so we recommend keeping it off. Especially on this track, it seemed to add so much brightness that the shakers in the background were almost hissing.?

Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," when played at moderate volumes, is reproduced with a sharp treble edge on the attack of the kick drum loop, while the sub-bass synth part that plays beneath the beat is delivered with subtlety. Again, this system is not really for bass lovers. Hip hop tracks like this one don't sound bad, but the vocals and mid-range aspects of the mix are the elements that stand out most; the low frequencies are there, but take a secondary role. At top volumes, this track also distorts.

The built-in Internet radio options are nice, but the touch sensitive buttons on the top control panel are also slow to respond, so actually switching between stations and creating presets is a bit of an annoyance. Regardless, the inclusion of Internet radio, along with three presets, is a plus, and you can also access the stations via the free Denon controller app.

So, the portability, water resistance, Internet radio, and rechargeable battery add convenience to the Apple, Android, and PC-friendly streaming Cocoon. It reminds us of another recent multi-faceted streaming system, the Pioneer A3 (XW-SMA3-K). Both speaker units offer excellent extra features, but the sound performance is not necessarily a huge strength.

It's more Denon's pricing that seems off. The Cocoon Portable is priced like a system that is more powerful and won't distort at top volumes, thanks in part to the wireless functionality and portability. If you're looking for a booming bass system that's also portable, the Cocoon Portable is not it. If you don't listen to much music with deep bass content and you plan to listen at more moderate levels, the audio performance is far more forgiving, and even sounds like a high quality system.

If you're looking for a wireless portable speaker with booming bass, consider the?Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox Portable. For a more refined, less booming audio experience, the wireless Libratone Zipp is a solid, stylish choice. And if you're looking for a smaller, more easily portable wireless option without sacrificing too much audio performance, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker is a strong Bluetooth choice that's easy to pack. For the money, the Denon Cocoon Portable offers several laudable features, but it's hard to get past the distortion issues at high volumes.

Navigate Financial Difficulties With These Personal Bankruptcy Tips ...

A lot of people see bankruptcy in a negative way, but it is really a good solution in certain situations. Divorce or getting let go from a job can cause a person to look at personal bankruptcy as their sole choice. Whatever your reasons for filing bankruptcy, the article below can help.

Before you decide to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you should consider what your bankruptcy might have on others, as your family and friends may be affected. You can relieve yourself of any liability for debts that you may share with someone else through a Chapter 7 filing. Although, your creditors may insist that the co-debtor pay off the entire debt.

Carefully choose which bankruptcy is best for you. You may have more than one bankruptcy option available to you. It is necessary to understand the different types of bankruptcy available. Find out what positive and negative consequences each type will bring, and consult a bankruptcy lawyer to make sure your decision is correct.

Write down every one of your debts. After this, you can file bankruptcy, so make sure this document is accurate. Go through your papers and records so you are certain about actual amounts. Don?t speed through this step; to get the correct sums discharged, it behooves you to get the amounts correct.

A great tip to implement before filing a bankruptcy claim is to seriously take some personal inventory. What you?re looking for are the bad decisions that led to this particular point in time. Having large medical bills is an understandable cause of financial difficulties, but if you have an issue with shopping too much, you may have more trouble ahead. Don?t assume that you can handle getting past these things on your own, if you find yourself continuing to do it. Get help.

If you file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, do not assume that your debts will just be dismissed. Some debts might have to be reaffirmed. That means you need an entirely new agreement for paying them back, and other debts are simply not able to be discharged. For instance, you could not discharge child support obligations, court-sanctioned fines or even alimony payments through chapter 7.

Before you commit to a bankruptcy filing, make sure that your most troublesome debts can actually be discharged through bankruptcy. There are some types of debt (e.g., student loans, child support) that are not dischargeable in bankruptcy. If your debt is primarily made up of these types of debt, loan consolidation may be a better option than bankruptcy.

If you?re in financial trouble, you may want to rethink getting a divorce. A lot of individuals get a divorce and file for bankruptcy immediately because they did not plan for the troubles that they will be experiencing financially. A great way to avoid this is by not getting divorced.

Make a comprehensive list of all of your financial information before you file for bankruptcy. Leaving out information either purposely or by mistake can prolong your petition, or have it dismissed completely. The most meaningless, innocuous finance or expenditure needs to be listed when you file a claim. This type of income could come from doing odd jobs, extra cars or outstanding loans.

When filing for personal bankruptcy you should always be aware of your rights. You might hear from your creditors that your debts cannot be canceled through bankruptcy. Most states allow for the majority of debt to be included on a bankruptcy. If you are unsure about specific types of debt, check the bankruptcy laws in your state or consult an attorney.

Bankruptcy should be considered only as a last option. There is no need to feel stress if you are faced with this situation. When you read this article, you will find some very valuable information.

At first, it is easy to become overwhelmed by all the information out there on stock investment newsletter. You need to absorb a lot, but you will also benefit greatly. By using what you have learned here, you will be able to have a positive experience.

Prep Blog: Post Christmas Tournament Madness ? CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? The Christmas holiday has passed, and high school athletes got a few days off to open gifts and enjoy family time.

But the weekend after Christmas is one of the busiest in the state for high school teams as virtually every hockey, basketball and some wrestling squads compete in a holiday tournament. It gives fans a chance to see some of the best teams in the state square off in a competitive atmosphere without an entire season being on the line.

With that said, here are some of the best bets if you want to see some of the best teams and athletes in the state in action the rest of the week.

Boys Hockey: Schwan Cup

The Schwan Cup is easily the biggest boys holiday hockey tournament in Minnesota with 48 teams playing in four brackets around the Twin Cities. The thrill for the players is getting to the championship games in each bracket, which are all played at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul

The Gold Division is loaded with Minnetonka, Hill-Murray, Blaine, Burnsville, Breck, Duluth East, Edina and St. Thomas Academy. Most of those teams end up at Xcel Energy Center in March for the state tournament. Action got started Wednesday, with the highlight of the day being St. Thomas Academy?s 2-1 overtime win over Edina.

The other top hockey tournament in the metro is the Sports Authority Classic at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center. Action starts Thursday afternoon and the field includes Bloomington Jefferson, Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Moorhead, Lakeville North, Benilde-St. Margaret?s, Elk River and Maple Grove.

Boys Basketball: Catholic Spirit Tournament

The University of St. Thomas serves as host to one of the better boys high school basketball tournaments this weekend. Action gets started Thursday with an 8-team bracket that includes Wayzata, Hill-Murray, Rosemount, Providence Academy, Cretin-Derham Hall, St. Agnes, Milwaukee Bay View and Holy Angels. You?ll notice mostly private Catholic schools in the field.

The Granite City Classic at St. Cloud Apollo should also be a solid tournament. The field of 10 teams includes Rocori, Becker, St. Michael-Albertville, Blake, Sartell, Delano, Buffalo, St. Cloud Tech, St. Cloud Apollo and Apple Valley, which features one of the state?s top players, Tyus Jones.

Girls Basketball: Dick?s Sporting Goods Classic

The top girls basketball tournament in the metro area is the Dick?s Sporting Goods Classic at Hopkins High School. The field includes host Hopkins, St. Paul Central, Eden Prairie, Prior Lake, Minnetonka and Osseo. There?s also a very competitive tournament at Hill-Murray, which includes the host as well as Cretin-Derham Hall, Cooper, Totino-Grace, Wayzata, Mounds View, Centennial and Stillwater.

Wrestling: The Clash National Duals

If you want to see some of the best high school wrestling in the country, head to Rochester Community and Technical College this weekend. It serves as the host for the Clash National Duals, which are Friday and Saturday. There are 12 Minnesota schools in the field, led by national powerhouse Apple Valley.

Other Minnesota teams in the field include Burnsville, Forest Lake, Hastings, Kasson-Mantorville, Kimball, Owatonna, Prior Lake, Rochester Mayo, Simley, St. Michael-Albertville and Zumbrota-Mazeppa.

Also a good reminder: The Target Center will host the Timberwolves Shootout, an all-day basketball tournament, on Saturday, Jan. 5. The event features five Minnesota teams, and the day starts with Lakeview Christian Academy facing Onalaska (Wis.) at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m., DeLaSalle faces Blue Valley Northwest High School of Kansas. Roseville will face Valley High School of West Des Moines, Iowa, at 1 p.m. The final and featured match-up of the day puts Minnesota?s two top junior recruits against each other.

Tyus Jones and Rashad Vaughn will lead Apple Valley and Cooper respectively in a game that?s scheduled for 3 p.m. I?ll be at that game to get my first in-person look at each player. Both have received several offers from the best Division I programs in the country. The Gophers have offered scholarships to both.

There?s a lot you can learn when it comes to photography, and you could spend years learning the craft. However, just knowing a few key tips can mean taking great shots with your camera. This article contains some sound advice on how you can start taking shots you are proud of.

When photographing children, the best angle to take the picture from is their own eye level. Kneel down and put yourself at their height, snapping photos from the child?s point of view. This will give you excellent pictures of a child, set in the world at their height. Most pictures of kids are taken looking down from an adult?s point of view. This lends itself to many, many pictures of the top of a child?s head or an awkward angle of their face.

When shooting at night, it?s best to steady your camera on a tripod. Whether shooting film or digital, when you?re working at night the chances are you?re going to be using long shutter speeds. Any speeds slower than 1/30th of a second will show blurring and vibrations from the camera shaking. Mount your camera on a tripod to avoid these detrimental affects of camera shake.

Keep your camera clean and put away when not in use if you want to ensure that it always takes the best pictures possible. There are delicate parts inside of quality cameras that can become easily damaged due to shaking or even something like high humidity. Keep your camera safe and put away when you?re not snapping shots.

Find people to shoot without being too judgmental. You do not want to be on the lookout for ?interesting? people only. People who only interest you may not be interesting to anyone else. Every person is unique, so shoot people in general and not just people you think will make a good shot.

Trying to learn a new skill can often be frustrating, and photography is no exception to that rule. It is important, however, to enjoy the learning process. Do not stress over missed shots, blurry photos or technically imperfect pictures. You learn by trying, so relax, and enjoy the process of becoming a better photographer.

As a photographer, it is important to make sure you have proper lighting. If you do not have proper lighting your pictures will turn out dark, gloomy and underexposed. Take the time to think about the lighting.

Sometimes taking the perfect photograph comes down to being quick. Becoming familiar with the functions of your camera can be extremely helpful in those moments when you only have a fraction of a second to get the perfect picture. When in doubt, just snap away. If you take the shot, then there is no chance of losing that perfect picture.

Like any science or art form, photography is something you could study and read about for a good portion of your life. Or, you could just apply what you have read in this article and improve your photography immediately. Keep these tips in mind the next time your camera is in your hands and you?ll see better images quickly.

There are many ways to Buy PLR Photos but you need to know the most affordable deals. These days, you do not have to spend tons of money just to get the photos that you want. You might want to visit http://rawplrphotos.com for the best stream of photos just for you.

Broader background checks and denial criteria could help prevent mass shooting catastrophes, experts say

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Garen Wintemute, a leading authority on gun violence prevention and an emergency medicine physician at UC Davis, believes broader criteria for background checks and denials on gun purchases can help prevent future firearm violence, including mass shooting catastrophes such as those that occurred at Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Columbine.

"To reduce the number of deaths and injuries from firearms in the United States, we need to develop policies that require background checks for all firearm purchases, including private-party sales -- the most important source of firearms for criminal buyers and others who are prohibited from purchasing guns," said Wintemute, director of the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program and inaugural Susan P. Baker-Stephen P. Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at UC Davis.

"We need to prevent individuals with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime, such as assault and battery, from purchasing or possessing a firearm. We also need to develop better data and criteria that allow us to distinguish between those with a treatable mental disorder who do not have a history of violence from those with a history of violence or substance abuse," he said.

Wintemute's views posted on the Online First section of the New England Journal of Medicine website as a Perspective article, entitled "Tragedy's Legacy," on December 26, 2012. It also will appear in the journal's January 31, 2013 print edition.

According to Wintemute, the United States represents only 5 percent of the world's population, but it owns more than 40 percent of all firearms that are in civilians' hands. In addition, he believes that policies governing gun purchases and use have allowed the widest possible array of firearms to be available to the widest group of people, for use under the widest array of conditions. Wintemute specifically cites the "Stand Your Ground" laws, enacted at the state level, as dangerous experiments that have been used to legitimize shootings that once were considered to be murder.

Wintemute emphasizes taking a broad approach.

"It may be impossible to predict the next mass shooting incident, and we cannot expect interventions designed for specific circumstances to eliminate the risk of firearm violence. But we can change our firearms laws, based on existing evidence, to reduce harm and better ensure public safety," he said.

"Some 40 percent of all firearm transactions, for example, involve private-party sellers, who are not required to keep records and cannot obtain a background check," Wintemute said. "We need policies that prevent these quick, anonymous and undocumented sales. We also need policies that deny gun purchases to those who we know are at high risk for violence."

Wintemute's research has shown that among persons who purchase firearms legally, those with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime are roughly nine times as likely as those with no criminal history to be arrested for a violent crime later. For those with two or more such prior convictions, he found the risk increases by a factor of 10 to 15. In addition, studies have shown that firearm owners who abuse alcohol are more likely than other owners to engage in violence-related firearm behavior.

"We know that comprehensive background checks and expanded denial criteria are feasible and effective, because they are in place in many states and have been evaluated," Wintemute said. "In California, the denial policy reduced the risk of violence and firearm-related crime by 23 percent among those whose purchases were denied. But we need to broaden these and other effective state-level regulations to eliminate the flow of firearms from states where laws are lax to states where laws are stricter."

Wintemute also notes that proposals for comprehensive background checks and denials for misdemeanor violence and for alcohol abuse enjoy broad public support, including among firearm owners. Survey data come from Wintemute's own research as well as a series of public polls conducted for the Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

"While the individual circumstances of the mass shooting massacres in the U.S. are different, we can only change the outcome if we confront the challenge of unchecked and easy access to firearms," Wintemute said. "Strengthening our background check and denial policies for firearm purchases will not eliminate firearm violence, but they can reduce it."

George H.W. Bush still in intensive care, but 'alert' and improving

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush remained in intensive care at a Houston hospital on Friday but his condition continues to improve, a spokesman said.

"The President is alert and, as always, in good spirits ? and his exchanges with doctors and nurses now include singing," family spokesman Jim McGrath said in a brief statement.

The 88-year-old Bush, the nation's oldest living former president, was admitted at Methodist Hospital in Houston on Nov. 23 because of a bronchitis-related cough, after spending about a week there earlier in November for the same condition.

The cough was mostly resolved by the time he was moved to intensive care on Sunday for treatment of a fever that doctors were having difficulty controlling.

"The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes and, like their doctors, are cautiously optimistic that the current course of treatment will be effective," McGrath said.

On Thursday, a longtime Bush aide tried to quell concern about Bush's condition by saying the former president likely would advise well-wishers to "put the harps back in the closet."

Jean Becker, Bush's Houston chief of staff, said the former president would likely be in the hospital for a while, noting his age and that "he had a terrible?case of bronchitis which then triggered a series of complications."

Becker said "most of the civilized world" contacted her after word spread that Bush had been placed in intensive care unit.

"Someday President George H.W. Bush might realize how beloved he is, but of course one of the reasons why he is so beloved is because he has no idea," Becker said in the at-times lighthearted statement that made multiple references to jokes and the former president's sense of humor.

Updates on his health are being limited out of respect for the family, she said.

The family had hoped Bush would have been well enough to spend Christmas at home. His cough eased, but he developed a persistent fever. His condition has since been downgraded to "guarded."

The former president has been visited by family and friends, including longtime friend James Baker III, his former Secretary of State. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, arrived Wednesday from her home in Bethesda, Md. Other visitors have included his sons George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor.

Bush and his wife, Barbara, live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Bush, the 41st president, had served two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president when he was elected in 1988. Four years later, after a term highlighted by the success of the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, he lost to Democrat Bill Clinton amid voters' concerns about the economy.

Bush was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He's skydived on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House, most recently when he turned 85.

Bush, also a former U.S. ambassador to China and CIA director, suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease that forced him in recent years to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair for mobility.

The tax bite of top mutual funds - Fortune Finance: Hedge Funds ...

By Scott Cendrowski

121220041822-tax-nightmare-gallery-horizontalFORTUNE -- It's the time when "Best funds of the year" lists start appearing in newspapers and glossy magazines. You might even be tempted to dump your portfolio's funds and replace them with these best-performers.

Slow down. Not only do you want to avoid chasing the hot fund of the moment, but you might want to see if the tax bill on some of these all-stars is so high that it strips you of much of the return you think you've earned. You're responsible for paying taxes on a fund's gains. But what fund rankings never tell you is what you'd owe Uncle Sam if you held the top performers.

The problem arises in funds with high turnover because all that buying and selling generates short-term capital gains taxed as ordinary income, a rate that climbs as high as 35%. The tax bill is also exacerbated when the same high-turnover fund relies on dividend payments, which are taxed at up to 35% for stocks held for only brief periods. This isn't a problem for investors who own funds in tax-deferred accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs. But if you're holding funds in a regular account, you want to pay attention.

MORE: 15 top stock picks from star investors

Some popular PIMCO funds offer a cautionary tale. Bond guru Bill Gross runs PIMCO's StocksPLUS Total Return fund (PSPTX), an index fund that tracks the S&P 500 using derivatives to juice returns. Morningstar ranks the fund as the sixth best performing active U.S. stock fund of the past year (ending Nov. 30). But once you consider the taxes you'd pay owning it, the fund gets dropped from the top ten. Its one-year return falls from 28.75% to 26.41% after taxes.

Still, not bad. Only two percentage points of gains are eaten up.

But look what happens over a slightly longer period. Gross runs another fund, PIMCO's Fundamental IndexPLUS Total Return fund (PIXAX). The fund's 19.9% annualized return over the past three years is reduced to just 7.24% annualized after adjusting for taxes. That's 12 percentage points of return lost to Uncle Sam each year. Big money.

MORE: Private equity for the average Joe? It's coming

When you pay taxes on high quarterly distributions from a fund, you reduce the amount of money you can reinvest. You're hampered from fully compounding your investment, a huge component of returns. That's the case in these PIMCO funds. For comparison, the Vanguard 500 Index Admiral (VFIAX) shares, an S&P 500 index fund, posted a three year annualized return of 11.23%, which only falls to 10.88% after taxes.

Thanks to Morningstar, we have a ranking of top 2012 funds after taxes (year ending Nov. 30). First, the top 10 funds according to pre-tax returns.

chart 1

Now look at the returns after accounting for taxes. PIMCO's StocksPLUS fund (PSPTX)?drops off the list entirely and many funds lose a couple points of return even over the short one-year period. (The tax effect is much larger over a longer holding period like three or five years.)

chart 2

Here's one last ranking. This time, a list of funds that generated the highest tax bill for investors over the past year. We show their total return, and the return lost to taxes. (This assumes you bought the funds last November and held them through the end of this November.)

chart 3

Remember: taxes are one more reason you should think twice before buying high-flying funds.

A Beautiful Find | Redfin Blog

December 19, 2012

Redfin today launched Redfin Collections, a gorgeous new Redfin.com feature for you to share sets of listing photos with your friends, your real estate agent and the vast Redfin community of real estate aficionados:

Already the thousands of Redfin fans invited to a September trial of Collections have created a catalog of desire, collecting photos of?modern architecture?and?celebrity mansions.

You can also draw on an inexhaustible supply of design ideas, from?luscious gardens, to?breathtaking kitchens,?giant windows, and?overstuffed libraries.

And of course there are a few?wacky Collections, too:?pretty pretty ponies,?Panda Pandemonium,?extreme taxidermy, and?palatial tree-houses.

A Big Change for Redfin
The whole idea of Collections is a big change for Redfin. It wasn?t easy for the world?s nerdiest real estate website, with numbers everywhere about people, properties and prices, to get gushy about pretty pictures. But some of our most artistic engineers and agents fought for this change, on the website and in our culture.

Just look at how a Collection opens, with the photos taking their places on the screen like little kids in a school-play. We rarely go out of our way for touches like that, but at last we wanted to do justice to the sense of discovery and desire that are the best parts about a home search.

When I was reviewing the final Collections ? and here you have to imagine the pursed lips of the food critic in ?Ratatouille,? expecting not to be impressed ? I was surprised by the intensity of my emotions over a perfect little bookshelf or a sudden vast expanse of green. It gave me a sense of what could be and a touch of what might have been.

It sounds silly but it really made me think of a poem someone made me read in high school, where ?footfalls echo in the memory, down the passage we did not take, towards the door we never opened, into the rose garden.? There are a lot of rose gardens in Redfin Collections, a lot of emotion.

A Big Change for the Industry
Collections are also a big change for the real estate industry, which has had a fitful relationship with social networks. Home-buying after all is often competitive rather than social. And home-sellers are rightly sensitive about the things people say about their place.

This is probably why no broker has developed online social tools for website users to share real estate information with others. And it?s also why Redfin had to build our own social tools, because the privacy in real estate is tricky, and we had to get it just right.

Redfin?s Collections don?t feature pictures of pretty dresses or pieces of chicken; we feature people?s homes. The owners may want the photos removed from the web once the house is no longer for sale. The listing agent is entitled to attribution for the photos.

Redfin Collections includes not only these safeguards, but also the real-estate context that a general photo-sharing site can?t: for example, the price and location of each home featured in a Collection; access to full, accurate details on the property; and a way to actually see the home in person.

How to Create a Collection
To access Collections, just click the new ?More? menu that appears in the header of every page on Redfin?s site:

To start your own Collection, just click the plus sign in the pop-up button that appears at the top right of a listing photo whenever your mouse hovers above it:

Then give the collection a name, and add a caption to the first photo:

Once you click Add Photo, you?ve created a Collection! When you add subsequent photos to a Collection, we?ll ask whether you want to contribute to an existing Collection or to start a new one.

Everyone can see any Collection, but once a home sells, individual home photos within the Collection may be limited to registered users, depending on what?s allowed in local listing agreements.

We also offer comments on photos, but with similar limits, based on whether the seller permits comments in the listing agreement:

If the seller doesn?t agree to comments, we don?t even allow a caption on the photo.

Of course, we make it easy to share Collections on Facebook, Twitter or via email.?And we let you subscribe to a Collection, notifying you whenever a new photo of a gorgeous kitchen or a quirky bathroom is added.

Our hope is that we?ve found a way to let people share what they love about real estate while still respecting the rights of sellers and their agents.

The conversation about the homes we dream about ? and laugh about, and can?t stop thinking about ? has always been happening, and real estate agents have always been a part of it, even now as it moves online with Redfin Collections.

Many thanks to the whole Collections team, which rallied to get Collections out the door by year-end, and to the thousands of early users who helped us get it done right.

Children Keep Active In Science - Reference and Education ...

December 10th, 2012 by admin

At my high school reunion last week, I ran into an old friend. He and I had a biology class together when we were young. He told me that summer activities were a wonderful activity for youngsters, and that the best activities were science summer camps. He said that his children had attended some that were very enriching to their knowledge of science. He said that they were well worth the money that they cost, and they could meet others there.

Olympus E-PL5 and E-PM2 review: Great shots in a not-so-great package

14 hrs.

The E-PL5 and E-PM2 (or PEN Lite and PEN Mini, respectively) are the latest micro four-thirds cameras from Olympus. The competition is fierce at the $500-$700 level, which is what these devices go for;?Are these cameras worthwhile? And which should you get?

The name "micro four-thirds" refers to the size of?cameras' sensor, which is four-thirds of an inch diagonally. It's smaller than the most common DSLR sensor (APS-C) by quite a bit, and in the early days that meant image quality and size weren't as good. But the later generations improved that, and in particular Olympus's?E-M5, which we reviewed here, stood out as at least as good as the DSLR competition.

The 16-megapixel sensor that produced such solid images in the E-M5 was passed on to the new PEN series, which means you can get essentially the same images as that $1,300 camera for half the price. You give up the electronic viewfinder and a number of other features, but you'll get great pictures and solid HD video. That we knew before even holding the cameras. So, how do they handle?

Lite vs. Mini
The two models of PEN are totally interchangeable as far as image quality is concerned. If you put them in the same situation with the same settings, the resulting pictures will be more or less indistinguishable. They do differ in other ways, however.

The E-PL5 costs $100 more (for a total of $699 with kit lens), and for that extra bill you get a few things: An articulating LCD screen that can tilt down, up, or flip over completely; A dial to switch quickly between shooting modes; a more "pro" looking button layout; and, lastly, swappable front grips. It's also a little thicker, but both cameras are very compact.

Trust me, go with the E-PL5 over the E-PM2. I like the buttons and layout better, the articulating LCD is useful and the mode dial is more convenient than using the menu to change modes. Losing those features isn't worth keeping that $100.

Small hands recommended
Compact cameras tend to fall under two categories: fiddly and non-fiddly. These are definitely fiddly.

If you have large hands and/or do not enjoy navigating menus via tiny control dials and microscopic buttons, these cameras are not for you. The thumb dial is scarcely half-an-inch in diameter and those with large fingers will have to use a fingernail for fine adjustments.

Fortunately, you have a touchscreen with which to change settings, but it too is petite, and while sometimes it's convenient to use a fingertip instead of the control dial, the settings?don't feel like they were designed for touch.

Using the touchscreen to take a picture, however, is snappy and fun, just as it was on the E-M5. Autofocus performance is not supposed to be as good, but it's definitely fast enough to catch a cat jumping or a kid smiling.

Power users, prepare for frustration
The documentation and settings for the PEN series are just plain bad. The manual is incomplete and the translation so-so. And while a simplified menu might make sense for the consumer-oriented PEN Mini, why not pull out the stops?on the more upmarket PEN Lite?

Let's say you wanted the function button to switch between manual and autofocus, and you want the dial to control aperture in A mode. You have to go deep into the menus to enable advanced settings at all, then navigate to Settings ->?Custom Menu ->?Button/Dial ->?Button Function ->?Function and search through the list for what you want. Then you have go deep into Dial Function to "unlock" the dial, allowing it to... work like a dial. Why was it "locked" in the first place?

These buried settings give you a lot of control over the camera, which was one of the things that made the E-M5 so exciting. And if you spend half an hour poring over these things (as I said,?the manual is little help), you can get things set up nicely. But why are some basic settings five menus deep? And why do?others, like flash mode, offer more options than you need from the get-go? It's?illogical, and potentially confusing to someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time experimenting with their new camera.

Better than the rest?
The new sensor in the PEN cameras gives them a leg up on?the competition; super-compact camera systems like Pentax's Q and Nikon's 1 series have compromised on image quality to save space (though?they're by no means poor cameras). Other M4/3 systems, like those from Panasonic, are better but still not up to the challenge.

On the other hand, I felt like Panasonic's GX1 (released early this year) was more friendly to serious shooting ? and it has a pop-up flash to boot. Handling isn't the PEN series' strong point, and Olympus should consider doing a serious redesign of the layout and interface.

If you're willing to spend a little more, Sony's NEX series has improved quite a bit since its early days; The NEX-5R is the latest in the line and has garnered solid reviews. And Canon's first foray into mirrorless cameras, the EOS?M, is also an attractive option if you want to take advantage of that company's great lens selection.

Leave the E-PM2 on the shelf; if?you want to save money, pick up a high-end point-and-shoot like the Canon S110 or the?Panasonic LX7. But if you have small hands, love good image quality, and want an articulating screen, the E-PL5 is a solid choice ? once you spend a little time getting it to work the way you want it to.

Rex Ryan Made Huge Mistake Not Turning to Tebow on Monday Night Football

The New York Jets have arguably the worst quarterback situation in the entire NFL,?which is saying a lot considering teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars aren't sitting pretty in that department either.

Even more telling of the Jets' situation under center is that running out Tim Tebow?a quarterback with obvious limitations?is a better option than sticking with the former fifth-overall pick, Mark Sanchez.

During Monday night's loss to the Tennessee Titans, Sanchez completed just 13-of-28 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. But it was his five turnovers (four interceptions) that transformed an abysmal performance into one that is completely unacceptable at the professional level?against one of the NFL's worst defenses mind you.

Tebow did see the field in the second quarter, and though it didn't yield great results, the limited play-calling with him in at quarterback would have certainly mitigated the gluttony of turnovers and given the Jets a better chance to win.

Head coach Rex Ryan must take the ball out of Sanchez's hands for good, a decision that should have been made on Monday night.

Back in Week 13 against the Cardinals, Ryan inserted backup Greg McElroy into the lineup. The second-year quarterback responded by throwing a touchdown pass to tight end Jeff Cumberland that clinched a 7-6 victory for the Jets.

Would the Jets have won on Monday night had Tebow finished out the game?

Would the Jets have won on Monday night had Tebow finished out the game?

  • Yes

  • No

While it was merely a coincidence that Tebow was inactive for that game, Ryan should have learned his lesson with that move. Instead, Sanchez gave Monday night's game away with three turnovers in New York's final three possessions.

With an outside shot of making the postseason with a victory, Ryan's decision to stick with Sanchez becomes even more arcane. For a guy increasingly on the hot seat as the weeks pass, he's sure dropping the ball when it comes to making the quick decisions that define the success of head coaches in this league.

Though Tebow probably isn't the long-term answer?nor is it Sanchez, apparently?the Jets and Ryan could have made a short-term statement with a win on Monday night.

Instead, New York's 2012 season, and possibly the careers of Ryan and Sanchez, was literally thrown away.

Retailer leaks nextgen AMD Radeon HD 8000 graphics chip inside ASUS Vivobook

Give or take the odd roadmap, we're mostly in the dark about AMD's specific intentions for 2013. This spec sheet for an unannounced 13-inch Asus Vivobook U38DT drops a couple more crumbs, however, suggesting there'll be a fresh stack of Radeon HD 8000-series graphics chips before too long -- including a 8550M laptop variant with a gig of dedicated memory. It's hard to say anything definite beyond that, and in fact it's even possible that the 8550M will be a last-gen chip rebranded as part of next year's product range -- although that sort of behavior is more typical of NVIDIA. The laptop itself is very similar to the Trinity-powered Vivobook U38N we've already spotted at the FCC, and given that the retailer mentions delivery from the end of December, there's at least some possibility that this model is meant to tie-in with an official announcement at CES -- in which case we'll be right there to bring you a fuller update.
