Playtime Music Studios | 10 summer-friendly literacy activities for ...

Source: www.firstcoastymca.org

Ask a child to define ?summer slide? and responses may include descriptions of the tunnel slides at the local park, the indoor slide at the restaurant down the street, or maybe the water slide at the pool. Ask an early childhood educator, however, and the response would probably include an explanation of what can happen to the early literacy skills of a child who doesn?t read or engage in early literacy activities over the summer.

As a child?s first and best teacher, parent involvement in early childhood education can stop the ?summer slide.? We put together 10 tried-and-true early literacy activities for families to do together over the summer (or anytime!) that supports early literacy development.

10 summer-friendly early literacy activities for family involvement in early childhood education

1. Read with your child 20 minutes each day. Include a mixture of books that you both choose.

2. Practice letter writing in the sandbox, chalk on the sidewalk, or even a cookie sheet with flour (for those rainy days).

3. Act out your child?s favorite story together.

4. Go on a ?Letter Sound? scavenger hunt. Help your child find objects around the house or in your neighborhood that start with every letter of the alphabet.

5. Listen to books on CD or download stories from play.kindermusik.com.

6. Add eBooks to your reading list. eBooks can be especially engaging for reluctant readers.

7. Go fishing. Put magnetic letters in a bowl. Tie a string to a paper clip and let your child ?fish? for a letter. After catching a letter, your child identifies the letter and the sound it makes.

8. Connect stories to your child?s life. Reading a book with characters that live in the woods? Go on a hike. Is the setting at a lake? Visit a lake, pond, or even a stream.

9. Look at the clouds and make up stories about what you see.

10. Play ?I Spy? with letter sounds. ?I spy something that starts with the letter B.? (Then make the sound of the letter.)

Early literacy curriculum increases family involvement in early childhood education

ABC Music & Me uses music and movement to teach young children early literacy and language. We also increase parent involvement in early childhood education by providing families each month with the music from class as well as a Family Activity Guide (available in English and Spanish). The guide includes the story from class and related literacy activities that families can do together at home.

For more information on how ABC Music & Me uses music to teach early language and literacy and increase parent involvement, email us at info@abcmusicandme.com.

Chris Douglas-Roberts trying to get his NBA career started again

LAS VEGAS ? He won't roll his eyes. He won't shake his head. He won't sigh.

If this is what it takes for Chris Douglas-Roberts to get back into the NBA, well, bring on as many seemingly meaningless games as it takes.

The onetime college star whose professional career once held significant promise now finds himself among hundreds of fringe hopefuls trying to impress in the Las Vegas Summer League.

It's an odd spot for a player who once averaged 17.3 points a game for a month with the New Jersey Nets.

Not that Douglas-Roberts thinks he's above it.

"At this point, I don't have any ego anymore," he said Wednesday night after a practice with the Lakers' summer league team. "I have to pay these dues, wherever they are. If they're in summer league, whatever, I have to pay these dues."

If things work out, Douglas-Roberts will earn an invitation to fall training camp with the Lakers or another team, where he would have to prove himself anew. If not, who knows? The 6-foot-7 swingman concedes he doesn't have a Plan B because he doesn't want it to detract from his focus on Plan A.

He was one of the last players cut in the Lakers' training camp last fall. After scoring as many as 49 points in one game during a brief stint in the Development League, he earned a call-up with the Dallas Mavericks but was waived after six games.

It was just another disappointment in a series of letdowns that started shortly after New Jersey drafted the former Memphis standout early in the second round in 2008. A knee injury limited him to 44 games in his rookie season.

The following season started with promise even though the Nets lost their first 17 games. Douglas-Roberts experienced a breakthrough, scoring in double figures in 20 of the team's first 28 games before he fell out of the rotation.

Kiki Vandeweghe, who was then New Jersey's interim coach, said the emergence of rookie Terrence Williams and the return of a few injured players resulted in reduced playing time for Douglas-Roberts.

"Chris hit a little bit of a confidence bump in the road when Terrence started playing well and Devin Harris got healthy," Vandeweghe said, "so a lot of the guard time was taken up."

The Nets traded Douglas-Roberts the next summer to Milwaukee, where he had a decent season. But with the lockout looming, Douglas-Roberts wanted to make sure he kept playing and signed with Virtus Bologna of the Italian League.

He's barely made a peep in the NBA since then.

A sprained ankle has limited him for two of the Lakers' three summer league games, his averages of eight points and 1.6 assists on the modest side. But Douglas-Roberts said he no longer fashions himself as a prolific scorer, his game having evolved into one that emphasizes versatility.

"I know people expect me to have tremendous scoring numbers, but that's not what I'm here to do, honestly," he said. "I'm just trying to play more of a point-forward role and get guys involved as if I was actually playing on the real team."

Appearances don't matter as much to Douglas-Roberts anymore. He acknowledged having cringed when he was in the Lakers' training camp last fall, his status having taken such a serious hit.

Now he's willing to do whatever it takes, something Vandeweghe said he's noticed while watching his former player in the summer league.

"He's somebody who has matured a great deal and is not only going to utilize his skill in scoring but to make others around him better, and that's something all young players need to learn ? to facilitate more, handle the ball, maybe run a team a little bit more," said Vandeweghe, who is the NBA's vice president of basketball operations. "Those are all things that come with time."

At 26, Douglas-Roberts realizes time is one commodity that's no longer in heavy supply when it comes to his making the NBA. He hopes a new attitude results in a different outcome.

"Last year, I kind of had a higher expectation," he said. "But you can't do that. You're never done paying dues and that's how I look at this."

Changes urged after 5 near airline collisions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Five near collisions ? four of them last year ? involving airliners that aborted landings prompted the National Transportation Safety Board to call Monday for changes in air traffic control procedures.

In a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration, the board said aborted landings are placing planes on converging flight paths, forcing pilots to execute evasive maneuvers at a low altitude to avoid a potential collision.

The board cited four such near collisions last year: two in Las Vegas, and one each in New York and Charlotte, N.C. There was also a similar near collision in Las Vegas in 2006. In each case, the pilot of at least one of the planes swiftly changed course to avoid a possible midair collision.

The FAA regulates safety and operates the national air traffic control system, while the board investigates accidents and safety incidents.

Aborted landings are not uncommon and can occur for many reasons, but such sudden changes in course can create the danger one plane will fly into the path of another plane that's taking off or landing.

McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is especially at risk for such incidents because of runways that are angled so that the flights paths of planes taking off simultaneously can cross. In one of the incidents at McCarran on July 30, 2012, a Spirit Airlines Airbus A319 and a Cessna Citation 510 came within 100 feet vertically and about 1,000 feet laterally before the pilot of the smaller Cessna four-seater changed course to avoid the airliner. The airliner executed the aborted landing.

In another incident on the same day at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, an American Airlines Boeing 737 aborted a landing at the same time as a Pinnacle Airlines regional jet was taking off. The two planes were being handled by different air traffic controllers using different radio frequencies. The two planes came within about 1,600 feet laterally and 300 feet vertically.

In a third incident the same month in Charlotte, N.C., an Expressjet regional jet was executing an aborted landing at the same time an Air Wisconsin regional jet was taking off. The two planes were being guided by different controllers. The controller handling the Air Wisconsin flight alerted the pilot to the conflict with the other plane, but gave no instructions on how to avoid the potential collision. The two planes passed within less than 800 feet laterally and 400 feet vertically of each other.

A fourth incident occurred when a JetBlue Airbus A320 aborted a landing at McCarran on April 26, 2012, at the same time a Mexican-registered Learjet 60 was taking off. The JetBlue pilot turned sharply to avoid the Learjet, while the Learjet pilot initiated a rapid climb to avoid the airliner. Radar data showed the climb rate at 6,000 feet per minute immediately after departure. In radio transmissions from the pilot, the airplane's stick-shaker, a cockpit safety system, can be heard in the background warning the pilot of an imminent stall.

The only warning from the controller to the Learjet pilot was to "go low," but by the time the instruction was issued, the plane was climbing at a high rate and the pilot was unable to comply. The planes came within less than 1,600 feet laterally and 100 feet vertically of each other.

Another McCarran incident cited by the board occurred on Jan. 27, 2006, between a United Airlines Airbus A320 that was instructed by controllers to abort a landing because of a potential conflict with a Beechcraft BE200, a twin-engine turboprop. While attempting to circle around, the United plane nearly collided with an American Airlines Boeing 757 that was taking off.

The United pilot made "made an evasive turn to the right to avoid a potential collision, reportedly banking as much as 40 degrees to avoid crossing" the flight path of the American plane, the board said. The American plane also made a slight left turn away from the other plane.

Afterward, the United flight crew told investigators that "the tower controllers did not seem to have clear procedures for separating aircraft in the event of a go-around (aborted landing) and may not have had the same perception of an impending collision that they (the crew) did," the board's letter said.

The FAA said in a statement that the agency has "thoroughly investigated the incidents and took aggressive steps to address the causes."

"The FAA takes NTSB recommendations very seriously and will respond to the board within 90 days," the statement said.

Among the actions the agency has taken at McCarran is placing more air traffic managers on duty whose aim is to focus on conflicting flight paths, according to an FAA official who wasn't authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be named. The agency also is testing several new technologies aimed at alerting controllers to the potential for such collisions, the official said.

Israeli actors protest closing Palestinian theater

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Puppeteers from the Israeli version of Sesame Street protested Monday against Israel's closure of a Palestinian children's puppet festival, arguing that puppet theater poses no threat to Israeli security.

Ariel Doron, the voice of Elmo on the Israeli version of the popular children's television show, and Yousef Sweid, who plays an Arab Muppet on the show, created a Facebook group named Puppets4All calling on Israel to permit the festival. Two other Israeli Sesame Street puppeteers, along with a number of fellow Israeli actors, uploaded photos to the Facebook group holding puppets and signs protesting the closure.

"I think every boy and girl deserves to see puppet theater," said Doron. "There is no sense to this."

He said Monday his initiative was private and not coordinated with Sesame Street. Miri Yanai Meir of Israel's Sesame Street said the show had nothing to do with the puppeteers' initiative.

Israel's Ministry of Public Security last week ordered the temporary closure of the Hakawati Theater, the Palestinian national theater in east Jerusalem, canceling a children's festival set to feature puppet shows and plays. Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said organizers of the theater illegally received funds from the Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank.

Israel prohibits Palestinian government activity in Israeli-controlled east Jerusalem, which Palestinians seek as the capital of a future state. Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the eastern section of the city seized in the 1967 Mideast war.

Sesame Street, while steering clear of politics, has promoted messages of peace and tolerance in local versions of the show on Israeli and Palestinian television. Sesame Workshop, the American producer of the children's television show, re-launched the local programs in 2007 after the original versions went off the air due to lack of funding.

The new Israeli version of "Rechov Sumsum" includes a Muppet of Arab origin, as well as characters representing Israel's diverse Jewish immigrant population.

"Sharaa Simsim," the Palestinian counterpart, has sought to offer positive role models to Palestinian children. The show went off the air last year after the U.S. government cut funding, one of many Palestinian programs affected by a funding suspension aimed at punishing the Palestinians for a unilateral appeal to the U.N. for statehood.

Layla Sayegh of the Sharaa Simsim staff said the show will resume on Palestinian TV this fall with financing from Sesame Workshop and a local source. The U.S. will not resume funding for the program, Sayegh said.

Off-putting characteristics of Japanese adults still living with their parents

goo Ranking performed a survey looking at what off-putting characteristics there are of single men and women still living with their parents.

Demographics

Between the 2nd and 5th of May 2013 1,088 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were male, 23.3% in their teens, 24.4% in their twenties, 25.5% in their thirties, and 26.8% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

I?m not really sure how to illustrate this ? Japanese houses don?t tend to have basements for these characters to lurk in! A few years ago the buzzword parasite single was doing the rounds to describe people who particularly display characteristic number 2 below.
