Station closures are not the only measures outlined in the draft strategy plan released today by London Fire Brigade.

Commissioner Rob Dobson said he also wanted to recover some costs, such as charging for attending lift failures or false alarms.

The measures are outlined in the Draft Fifth London Safety Plan which sets out how the brigade will continue to keep Londoners safe over the next three years.

The proposals come against a backdrop of the brigade attending half as many fires compared with a decade ago, a third fewer house fires and almost a third fewer incidents altogether.

Fewer people in London are dying in fires, according to the brigade. From 2002 to 2012 an average of 56 people a year died in fires. In the decade from 1991 to 2001 it was nearly 80 a year.

In 2001, fire fighters were attending 150 fires a day, and are now attending 75 a day.

Fale alarms make up almost half, 48 per cent, of all the calls attended.
